A Weak Government is not good for Multi-racial Malaysia

I would like to thank all visitors to chedet.com. for their kind words and for welcoming me to the blogosphere. To be honest, I was indeed surprised by the overwhelming response to my weblog.

To my critics and detractors I welcome your comments, but I would appreciate that responses be focussed on the issue that I blog. This is to allow a healthy debate and to gauge points of view which differ from my own.

I apologise that due to the overwhelming traffic, I may not be able to respond to all comments and queries as much as I would like to. I will be selective and respond to points repeatedly raised by commentators in relation to what I've posted.

I shall also not respond, unless absolutely necessary, to issues that have been raised and answered by me in other forums, especially those pertaining to unsubstantiated allegations.

With regards to my first posting on the appointment of judges, most commentators disagreed with my comment that when Government works with the opposition it is a sign of weakness, and that I consider the opposition as the enemy.

Politically, the opposition is the enemy. Being forced to work with the opposition is not undemocratic but it shows up the weakness of the Government.

A weak government is not good for multi-racial Malaysia. It leads to unwarranted challenges against its authority. Governments cannot please everybody. If a Government cannot be firm and is forced to flip-flop there will be a lack of confidence which does not augur well for the smooth implementation of policies or project. Some people might already have noticed this.

A Government with little need for opposition support would be better able to disregard the sniping that all Governments must face. It should however take note of opposition views and respond where necessary.

In today's context, the Federal Government is unable to initiate necessary changes to the constitution and would be held to ransom every time.

One of the most important things about a two-thirds majority is that there would be hardly any threat of defection. Today we hear of this threat everyday. The leadership of the Barisan Nasional is like a cat on hot bricks. And cats on hot bricks cannot achieve anything.

Previous Federal Governments had never failed to obtain the two-thirds majority. As a measure of strength, a two-thirds majority allows a Government to do everything on its own and be totally independent.

But perhaps the proposed request for opposition support is made with sincerity in the spirit of democracy.

The question is why now? Why not when the Government had 90 percent majority after the General Election of 2004? Changes to the way judges are picked could have been done after the 2004 resounding victory.

I have always been of the opinion that this country must have a strong and independent Federal Government which can then serve the country and people without fear or favour.

But I have been on record in advocating a strong opposition. This is to ensure the Government does not stray from the right path, or abuse its authority.

The combination of a strong (two-thirds majority) Government and an Opposition with the capacity and willingness to check abuses by the Government would serve Malaysia well.

As to the Government's latest proposal to set up a judicial commission, is it because it now thinks it is a good thing or is it a desperate attempt to win back the support it has lost?

As for my criticisms of the leaders of the present Government, I believe I have every right to do so. Retiring from the Government simply means giving up authority and power. It does not mean I must abdicate my role as a citizen. I have every right to be concerned over the flip-flopping mismanagement of this country and that of the party I helped to revive in 1987. The party does not belong to Dato Seri Abdullah alone. Nor is it meant to support him as leader even when he mishandled the elections and the country. The party does not belong to me either. It belongs to all its members. Presently the members are not permitted to be critical. They can merely say yes to what Dato Seri Abdullah says or does.

Since the opposition is also supporting Dato Seri Abdullah, if I do not criticise, then no one will. And without criticisms the Government and Dato Seri Abdullah can really go wrong.

(Reminder: I welcome criticisms and critical comments and I will publish them. However, I will not publish comments containing profanities and demeaning references to certain names. Anonymous postings will also not be published.)

Salam Tun,

Here are number of things that in my humble opinion, the Government should act effective immediately to gain back its relevency:-

1. The current PM Abdullah must stop any attempt to change any policy what so ever to cool down the current flip-flopping situation.

2. That PM Abdullah and his cabinet must apologise to you especially for being so rude, ungrateful and immoral since being in power. Generally, they should seek forgiveness to all Malaysians for letting us down terribly.

3. PM Abdullah must returned back what he took from us Malaysian in front of our own eyes. Namely the crooked bridge, Tengku Makaleel back to Proton, NST back to patriotic editor etc. He must abolish his pet project i.e Islam Hadhari that brought more harm than good to the nation and the muslim world.

4. PM Abdullah must stop his act of nepotisme in his role as a leader and should:-
a. resign or,
b. ask his son-in-law to resign or,
c. they both resign.

I guess option c would be best for the country right now.

Thanks TUN....

YABhg Tun,

Agreed that to be effective there needs to be a strong govt, having 2/3 majority. But the rakyat may have seen many abuses and that is why they reduce Paklah to imnple majority.

On the other hand, the big opposition numbers lack quality. The established personalities are experienced enough and politically savvy, but many of the MPs are 'berhingus'. Some might even be scared to debate in parliment.

Could the rakyat just want to experiment? Granted, those who joined the 'reformasi' bandwagon in 1999 were then not even of voting age. But in March 2008 all of them go for 'reformasi' and vote for PKR.

Paklah's 'reforms' are meant to entice this group or to win over the Bar Council ?

Or should he look for other 'reforms' and 'goodies' to win back the support for BN beyond these two groups ?

I am sure YABhg Tun have the remedies. How we wish Paklah is more enlightened.

Hello Tun,

Very happy to say hi to the Legend himself. You are the greatest PM Malaysians ever had.

Analogically speaking, "consumers' taste" has changed and an "old brand" has lost it's market share. Since only the best will do - they are still fighting it out - everyday.... Any suggestions how all parties could "more professionally" move forward, Tun ? How would you handle a simple majority situation like this?

Benjamin Nicholas Cameron said...

Dear Tun,

I do not agree. Malaysian's government prior to Mar 8th (that include your tenure as PM) was a Strong government.

Yet, it has never been good for multi-racial Malaysia. Especially towards the end of 1990s, and going downhill eversince.

"The combination of a strong (two-thirds majority) Government and an Opposition with the capacity and willingness to check abuses by the Government would serve Malaysia well."

I find that statement contradictory. How is it possible for an opposition (the minority) to be strong if a party (BN in this case) holds two-thirds majority in the government? It is just not possible for the opposition to check any government abuses when they have no say in any constitutional amendments. How do you explain that?

There is no such mindset as " Weak Government" based on MY opinion.

If we have a positive and openness mindset , ruling and opposition can work together even if any of both party win or loss, remember this, my version”” Apabila 2 gajah berlaga, mati semua semut dipijak , dendam semut kepada gajah adalah dengan bisanya”.
So why do they halt on all activities/development towards the opposition states?, take for example :,directive from Tourism minister on activities , Finance minister on development.( I don’t want to say much, news media says it all)

Remember we “ rakyat “ vote who is the government , not government vote who we are.
The term stated “ Weak Government” means “ Weak Rakyat”, and that involve all level of races , and yes, I agree we are weak as a nation. But bear in mind before the previous election we already are in weak position in the eyes of the world. Why did I say this, 1 simple question, What is the highest education for all our Menteri-menteri , YB, Datuk(LORD) and etc etc that manage our country “”MALAYSIA”.? Pls find out
If we were to speak in public on this, “Keluar dari Malaysia!!” is the word towards the speaker who say this..

Many hot issues come and go like hot cakes, but once eaten, it flushes to the toilet.””Dilupakan””
To the eyes of the menteri/YB/datuk.. etc, they are doing their best, but bear in mind, to the rakyat point of view what they are doing is not enough.” Tidak teliti, Tidak bertanggungjawab,” and sometimes very fishy.
In this coming era, rakyat don’t care whether the representative are disable, poor or “mad”, we only cares about how our tax money are spend. Simple !!.

So I personally don’t agree on "A Weak Government is not good for Multi-racial Malaysia", human being of any races are resilient when it comes in hard time, not good is because we need to swallow the bitter pills, but good in term of we can be more independent.

Becoming a government servant is the last choice of employment. Why can't Malaysia make it the other way around. Tripple the pay and get rid of non performer. Get quality people in with stict requirement of entry and objectively select.
The stonger the team are with individuals who can really contribute will make a great impact to overall initiative that the government wish to achieve.
There are a lot of ideas out there but implementation is weak... Dear Tun what is your opinion other than having to consider government budget?

Dear Tun,

First of all, "POLITIC IS LIFE".
A stable government, means stable life.
A weak government, means a weak life!
A struggle government, means a struggle life!!

Abuse of power normally happen in a very strong government who can control or do anything they like, with less, or without opposition debating.
In my opinion, opposition always act as watchdog to check and balance what the government do. And to make sure no one can be over power to decision making.
As such, a balancing act will be 60:40 to form an idea parliamen.
A weak government will cause a weak society or community. Whilst politician are fighting for their power, Rakyat are feeling unsecure over their life, job, CPF, petrol price, household price.....

Tun Dr. Mahathir,
I must commend you for your active mind at the advanced age of 82 (forgive if I got it wrong). The overwhelming response to the initiation of your blog shows that the rakyat still remember and value your contribution towards putting Malaysia on the world map.

I beg to differ with your ideas that:
(i) Politically, the Opposition is the enemy
(ii) Strong government means a 2/3 majority

According to the adversarial parliamentary system we have inherited from the British, the Opposition is “His Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition”. The job of the Opposition is to scrutinize the proposals of the government of the day in a critical manner and contribute constructively to the final decision. Tunnel vision is a common malady which afflicts even the best of planners with the best intentions; a healthy critical view frequently provides a cure.
Granted that both sides in the Dewan Rakyat have to improve beyond Bigfoot and Big Monkey (who seem to get along well enough outside the arena), we seem to now have the beginnings of real debate there. Having live telecasts to the citizenry helps, because the very active cyber-yeomen of today will know how to beat the miscreants about the ears until they start behaving like real assemblymen – or risk being voted out in the next elections.
So, my point to you with regard to (i) is the Opposition is not the enemy.

Strong government is a government that can carry a motion by convincing the majority, not by changing the ground rules of the game. Changing the Constitution is synonymous with changing the ground rules of the games. Both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat must mature to the point that bipartisan votes for motions that benefit the country are possible. Giving anyone the power to change the ground rules of the game won’t help them mature in that sense.
So my point to you with regard to (ii) is strong government is made evident in bringing arguments that will convince the majority; not in a monolithic, unthinking bloc that crushes the powerless minority.

i don't think that's the case - a strong government should be a government that is able to consider the welfare of the people (which includes education, economy, security ... etc)
thus, in some cases, members of the opposition might come up with a better plan for certain issues, then we should all work together ... sometimes it's better to forgo partisan politics and go for the common good.

that's just my 2 cents.

Yes, a weak government will not provide stability to the country. But an ego government also cant do that too. A strong government can be build up by ruling or opposition party.

Beside that, we need to think why opposition say so, but not juz reject it or ignore it all the time. Every country need an opposition to check the ruling party. Opposition not always wrong like what you think.

Thank you.

salam Tun,

lots of people are saying that we need strong opposition as the many western countries has strong opposition and where no single party has the absolute upper hand in any house but they forget that malaysia is multi racial country not like the most of the western countries.
we need at least 2/3 majority to rule the country without thinking much on politics.now the government will spend time more on politics rather than developing the country.

eddy said...

Salam Hormat Tun. I do not agree about the requirement that you need 2/3 majority to govern strongly, it is actually sufficient to rule strongly over a multi racial Malaysia with a simple majority BUT provided that you must have a STRONG LEADER who loves his nation above anything or any one else.

Unfortunately for Malaysia we now have a WEAK LEADER who apparently loves his family more than the nation, with a simple majority to rule. The cancellation of the JB Scenic bridge and now the delay on the construction of the second Penang bridge are examples of a Weak Government as a direct consequence of Weak Leadership.

Dear Tun,

I am very glad that you have started your own blog.If Datuk Marina had a role in this,I sincerely thank her for it. I have suggested in her blog a few times on the idea that you blog.

Yes, with regards to your posting I agree that a weak government will not be good for the country...but, looking at the situation now I think we have far worse than a weak government..So what do we have?

I think we have a clueless government. They are not even like cats on hot bricks. They are more like zombies jumping up and down and saying yes to everything and yet still go nowhere.

On the judges...I dont know about you but I think the Government was so desperate to show they are transparent and so that was the best idea they can cook up with...

The idea was to appoint a lawyer who is perceived to be impartial as a senator and let him be in charge of the law, then throw a nice dinner, put some cash in envelopes, call in flip flop reporters ( we have a few of that types) and then 'market' to the rakyat that the Government is reforming...

It is a flip flop Government which absolutely do not know what they should do. It is good that someone in your stature is criticising. Some one must do it and I sincerely hope you will find the strength to do so.

Thats all for now Tun. I pray you will and can find the time to keep us alert with your ideas, comments and action through your blog.

Hi Tun,
I agree with you that a strong government is positive for the country as it provides stability and enable the country to move forward quickly as decision making is more smooth. However, I believe that for us to reach that stage, we need to have a solid, capable and clean government to start of with. The recent election results indicated that the people have qualms over the government such as corruption and some rhetoric acts by our leaders. Of course, change usually goes hand in hand with instability and possibly chaos. But, I believe that if the ruling government wake up and begin to listen to the people/eliminate racial politics after this political tsunami, then, I think it's worth it. We never know, maybe 4 years later, if BN does a good job and start implementing policies that are deemed reasonable, clean and progressive, I'm sure the majority of us would be confident in voting BN back in again with a strong 2/3 majority.

Rozaimi Bin Mohd Said said...

Tun, you are talking about weak leadership. You are right. At the moment we have weak leaders running the country's administration. But to me, the question is why do we have weak leaders? I believe you are the best person to answer the question, as you were the one mentoring these weak leaders at one point of time and you were also the one who appointed the weak leader to succeed you. Your justification that Pak Lah was "clean" when you appointed him to be your successor, to me does not hold water. You were the PM for 22 years and Pak Lah had been in, out and in again in your cabinet line up. Do't tell me that you did not know Pak Lah.

As for KJ's role as the unseen hand, I think you should be aware of this factor long ago before you step down, as KJ had been Pak Lah's advisor then.

Whatever it is, Tun, I humbly think that like it or not you should also be partly responsible for the weak leadership the nation has at the moment. Was your succession planning went wrong?

Greetings Sir,

Sir, with all do respect, do you for see that the present government will be able to hold up against the opposition and regain back its rightful position and trust as a worthy government to lead the nation? Or must there be a drastic change in order to get things going?

And for the opposition, as led by Anwar Ibrahim, do u really think that they are capable to take over as federal government (stated by Anwar Inbrahim himself) by this year? Is it possible or is he just sending a warning shot to the Federal Gov?

I may not be good at politics Sir, but when it concerns the nation and soil where i step on everyday, it is only right i take some noticee into the issues coming up.

By the way Sir, what are your comments on the recent Dewan Rakyat proceedings? I mean with all the name callings and lack of control and also the Speaker doing his job.

Any comments Sir?

Thank You

those that took the UK (or the West) practice of democracy as the benchmark for Malaysian politics are wrong.

Despite them practicing "good governance", those western countries are the ones who have murdered and are still murdering peoples of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.

How can we make these murderers' practice of democracy as our benchmark?

However, a strong gov will need a strong leader. Ppl like you. Our current admin do nothave this. They seems not in control. Rakyat see all of this. Isu harga barang, how could the rakyat believe the minister when they say everything is under control and at the same time they are feeling the price hike.

I guess during your time Tun, you have always manage to bake a bigger cake for us all. Now, the current admin not only fail to bake one for us, the remaining bit was bitten out by inflation.

Both party bumi and non bumi are fighting for the remaining cake, thinking they may benefit from it. I guess, both are wrong. It only creates discomfort for us Malaysian. I guess the economy policy has to be reviewed. Your leadership has save us from the IMF. I do not see this inflation problem occurs if you are still at the helm.

For me, the swing to PR not because of really of the keris isssues or DSAI, it is because of economy. Ppl are feeling it, and DSAI is on;y an oppurtunist promising something that he could not deliver.

A government having more than 2/3 majority will invariably forget to take into account different groups in Malaysian society. They have the power to do anything they want. They have the power to enact and follow through with policies. What happens though when people are marginalized? What happens when the policies are detrimental to 33% of the population but beneficial to 66%? What will the 33% have?

Working with the opposition creates better policies and if government policies are of sound nature then the opposition will be hard pressed to oppose them. The government must be able to prove to the people that what they are doing is for the best of everybody. How will that ever happen if there is no debate at all?

Dear Tun,

Good day.

Perhaps our nations almost have been going through cloudiness minded and showing what we needs and what we wants. Sometime I am very proud to be a Malaysian because there are no such country like us to living together with different racial from many countries happy and peaceful (but couldn't heartfelt to each other, might some of policy need to change / update).

We are always upgrading ourself to receive the global changing but government like living alone didn't catch up the global economics. We can see a lot of developing countries has build-up a such virtue and morality society but couldn't see any performance from our government but always focus on potence, politics, extremeness race minded and so on nothings help on nations but only themselves.

Although other countries have strong and wrangle of politic issues but they still developed the country very well. We must know one point there is our nation are not politics please (government) do what you need to do on nation! Not yourself!

Above just of my opinion on WEAK GOVERNMENT is helpless on their nation.

P/S: I really hope that Tun you can come back to us!

Wishing You Have Good Health Always.

Now that I have 2 (age 9 and 5) kids who I wish would one day think intelligently like you, brave, outspoken and amazingly confident. I even told my kids about you and how I wish they will grow up to be just like you. Sorry to say, I don't have the same feeling whenever Pak Lah does the talking coz to me he is just reading his script, I tried to find the meaning behind the script...but I found NOTHING...Just want to tell you how happy I am being able to write to you and I will always be one of your strong supporters..always!

The respected Tun Dr. Mahathir,

Yes, a weak government is not good for multi-racial Malaysia. Also, an unprofessional government could affect efficiency and accountability in the government systems. Such a weak and unprofessional relationship could lead to or create the appearance of favouritism, misuse of authority and detract from a leader’s ability to lead.

I must be frank and the result of this political process is now a disputable constitution, a weak government and incoherent parliament.

The “sleepy” performance of AAB’s government was the result of a system that does not allow proper power-sharing among different races or political parties.

A government’s deficiencies in professionalism will cause corruption to be widespread. The result of the March 8 election had prompted the rakyat and some politicians asking BN + UMNO to go into a wide-scale reform plan ... but the present government is still hesitant on that. I am sure you know the reasons. Right?

The result of the March 8 election suggests that govern ability in Malaysia is still a challenge. AAB’s BN government won by such a thin margin that it will be difficult to form a government capable of leading a deeply divided nation.

Dear Tun, do you think it is high time we have to revise the political process to ensure genuine power sharing among the races or/and political parties in decision making? Have you ever thought of this?

It will be a challenge for the weak new government to aggressively face the policy priorities that cannot be postponed anymore, while at the same time dealing with a strong opposition.

Let us pray that the current political process has not been built on myths and allegations.

I do have my own reservations about the way my country is being run.

Dear Tun,

I have always wanted to thank you for your public service in running Malaysia for the past decades. You will always have my respect as our past PM of Malaysia, notwithstanding certain policies of which I may not be in agreement with.

I mean history will remember what you have done for Malaysia or what you have not done. Racial matters in this country is always complicated and not easily solved, no matter who is in-charged, I guessed. As for me, the racial matters have make us Malaysian less cohesive as one nationality. I also take issue that Malaysia has not becoming more vibrant, cosmopolitan and forward looking and competitive fast enough to take up the challenges that the world will throw at us. Our education system leave many parents, like myself in doubts over its quality. We are so bogged down by the race issues that it sometimes are just plain suffocating. Too enbroil ourselves on this to even have enough energy to muster for bigger things. Policies made are racial based, well almost anywhere - then the frustrations built. Our current government seemed paralised by the defeat.

We must be more vocal in the international arena, more open and constructive. The internal bickering is almost make us look ike a banana country. I am currently working in Singapore and putting aside the fact that they are small, and without risking being label 'traitor', their policies are well thought through, well executed, mostly taken into consideration of all races and where applicable almost very engaged with the international arena. I mean they are always on the move. Their PM and president gave speeches everywhere and doing the selling almost everywhere they went to.

My question to you, Tun, what an we do and how can we go forward? I mean Thailand, Vietnam, are already hot on our heels to play catch-up.

Salam,

Apa yang terjadi ketika ini tidak lebih daripada cakap-cakap politik yang hanya mahu melihat 'do the right things at the right time at all time.'

Salam Tun ,
It had been a strong government upholding controlled policies that ensured political stability among the people over the past decades. This stabilty is the main factor that made the country progress and develop to what it is today. Yes there were flaws, faults and though hate to say it,there were abuses. To make things worse,a self-serving leader taking full advantage of the situation comitted blatant abuse of the system. This had triggered anger among the people and utmost contempt of the whole system. The same system that had been providing for the peace, harmony and prosperity to all.
Calls for more democracy, more open ,more just more freer policies were made and voted for, resulting in the reduced power of the present government. And still, calls for total change of the government to emulate systems of the more developed and industrialised Western countries are made. The fact that no other country in the world have the same multi-racial population nor the same diverse socio-economic history ,comparisons are persistently made.
How this is going to work, only time will tell. The next 4 years or so ,with the impending economic crisis, the 'maturity' and 'wisdom' of the people's choice will be tested on the ground.
I have only an old proverb to remind you all................ 'you can't keep the cake and eat it'.

Salam bahagia Tun...

Dear Tun,

You are very right. The present goverment is currently 'correcting' the wrongdoing of your era.But why only now? PM Abdullah Badawi won with a resounding victory with more than 90% of popular votes and the neccessary 2/3 majority in parliment to correct whatever he want to correct. After the election, BN leaders should have done a post mortem with grass root participation and find solutions for the rakyat's grievenesses. But what they are doing now is not an issue in the outcome of election.Price rice and inflation, economy slowdown, corruption, chronysm, retarded economy, 'sleeping PM', Son In Law's influence in policy making, crime, security, religion, HINDRAF and police actions and other issues are swept under the carpet and PM and his advisors has found a 'scape goat', that is Mahathir. This election was based on Badawi's rule on the last 4 years and nothing to do Mahathir's era.Opposition knows this very well. But a week goverment under Badawi is a good thing for them to ensure to topple and take over the goverment in next election. It is a shame that even Anwar claiming he can take over the goverment any time.

Umno and BN leaders, please take coorective actions.Go back to rakyat and find out the reasons why they showed thier back to them.Come out from your fantacies to reality.

If the current leaders just thinking the shortterm gains, I am very sure UMNO and BN will be lost in near future.

Stop criticising Mahathir and find the solutions for you mistakes.

Dear Tun,

Thank you for blogging in English. I am happy that you have chosen to blog in this international language as you shall attract a wider readership globally. Unlike the other UMNO politicians and ministers who only could think of Malaysia and thus only interested in blogging in Bahasa Melayu (because of pride, I suppose) -- limiting the readership to a small region and forgotten about the foreigners and overlooked those Malaysians who work and live abroad but passionate about the happenings in their motherland.

By the way, Tun, active blogging is good for health -- it makes your brain and heart working and pumping. The more you blog the more you are going to stay healthy. Trust me.

Happy blogging and wishing the best of health at all times!!

Dearest Tun,

I hope you are in the pink of health. I just want to say that I really admire and applaud your energy and courage in speaking your mind.

I still remember the talk organized by Promuda a couple of years back when someone asked your views on what could the new, young generation of Malaysians do to help the country to progress. You simply said "Speak up. Have the courage to speak up using all avenues available". The impact of that response of yours was immediately felt: there was a riveting silence amongst the audience.

You have developed, cultivated and nurtured your ideas, visions and analytical views into writings since you were young. Editorial magazines, newspapers articles, the Malay Dilemma and the works. And now, weblog. The avenues to express one's view might have changed and ever evolving, but the clarity and sensibility of your thoughts still provokes and inspires the minds of many.

Thank you for having graced our beloved nation. Thank you for having led our nation during its most informative period and built a solid foundation for malaysians to live in and make it a better place. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to observe and emulate the greatest patriot malaysia has ever produced.

I look forward to continue reading your views and thoughts with much pleasure and gratitude. I pray that you be blessed with health and joy always.

Keep on going, Tun!

You have my vote/support/respect.

Thank you for all you have done for Malaysia during your premiership. You're like a stern and loving father disciplining his children for their own good. i see the gov today has failed in many ways, mainly because they are concentrating on what they need and what they want rather than what the people want. I think a good government should protect the interest of the people, not the other way around. And focusing too much on racial stuff is not good for the multi-racial malaysia.Malaysian today, lacks discipline due to weak government. I really do agree with you.

Dear TUN,

i've been reading ur posts and i find it stimulating! honestly, i've tried to read all of the comments & feedbacks to ur post, but couldn't manage it because it were so many. i respect u very much by managing to read it.

regarding ur post, i've to say that i agrred with u. eventhough i'm not an expert in politics but i pay attention to what's happening in our country.

as u said, a weak government is not for multi-racial malaysia! and the word weak is very subjective. different people may have different opinions as what qualifies a government to be labelled as weak.

as for me, seeing the chaos that been happenning lately, i can consider that our government is indeed weak. one thing that really concerned me is the HINDRAF issue. i think the government didn't handled the case correctly! hmm, but who am i to complain! my voice is not loud enough to be heard by the UPPER PEOPLE.

i think that's all i have to say at this moment. just wanna wish u all the best and keep up the good work! our prayers will always be with you! once again, all the best and we still love u regardless of all the rumors being spread!

thank you very much...

Assalamualaikum Tun..

Selamat 'Pagi' YAB Tun Dr. M

With all due respect Tun, before i begin i would like to respond to some comments provided by some comment-givers requesting for Tun to write in B.M.

"Dengan secara hormat-nya, bagi rakyat yang meminta agar Tun ber-blog dalam Bahasa Malaysia bukanya tak munasabah, malah sesuatu permintaan yang mulia untuk menyemaikan sebuah masyarakat yang patriotik!

Namun begitu, sekalian patut fahami bahawa INTERNET ni...bukan cuma hak-asasi M'sia, tetapi SEDUNIA.

Lebih2 lagi, Saya bangsa cina. Harap Maaf"

Forgive me Tun. I will make this one short.

'A Weak Govt is not good for Multi-racial M'sia' - TRUE

However, a strong one too, may not be a best solution for this 'colorful country' either.

On what basis/grounds do we define WEAK or STRONG (in this context)?

The Malaysian multi-racial 'scene' is something i would describe as:-

"A beautiful blending of respect, understanding, acceptance & tolerance...resulting in the wonderful Muhibbah-feel"

Yes the govt(strong or not) does have a role to play in 'providing' the Rakyat a 'safe' & 'secure' 'environment' in order for the Muhibbah process to continue.

Patriots do not fight & die over soil alone...but for the PEOPLE who regards that soil as HOME. Therefore if all Malaysian can learn to Understand, Respect, & 'Love' one another, as a Rakyat we can strife for what our Tanahair needs most- DEVELOPMENT.

Our society is maturing, and this is now a fact. We should be proud. I know I AM...

I believe that what we need is a Govt that is neither WEAK, nor STRONG...but ALWAYS TRYING.

1) Trying for the Development of the Nation and its True Economics Potential,

2) Trying for the greater good of the Rakyat; education, welfare, and security.

M'sia is like a giant MNC (Multi-National Company). To ensure success & loyalty, 'employees' must feel 'security'.

Sekian, Terima Kasih Tun... :)

Dear Sir,

You advocate a strong opposition to provide a check and balance on the powers that be, yet in the same breath you say these same powers shouldn't be "held ransom" by a lack of a two-thirds majority.

How can an opposition provide any meaningful check and balance if the government can "independently" pass legislation without really worrying about what the opposition thinks? Especially in the status quo where all BN MPs must toe the party line or face disciplinary action.

This becomes all the more important when we consider any amendments to the Constitution, the document that forms and informs the principles we stand for as a nation.

If the PR didn't have enough votes to require the BN to negociate with them, there'd be absolutely no incentive for the BN to take any interest in dissenting views from opposition MPs. So a "lack of independence" as you put it, is necessary to give the phrase "check and balance" any practical meaning.

Salam & greetings Tun,

To be honest, I am just a normal 20-year old Malaysian citizen who currently studies in a college and have no interests whatsoever in politics because of its constant bickering among MP's and, hauling allegations and pretending to be nice just to appease the public and their leader.

What hit me hard now is the state of my beloved country is in right now. As you mentioned, the government is weak and always at its toes, fearing that one day the government officials might wake up in the middle of the night finding itself toppled by the opposition.

Wake up!! Do anyone realize that our multi-racial relationship is at its lowest point right now? How can Malaysia survive if its citizen are not united in the face of global challenges that we are currently facing right now? Do anyone realize how unpatriotic Malaysian teenagers are nowadays? Do anyone realizes that other nations have been keeping up with us and even surpass us? Politicians, please tend to the rakyat and do your duty to serve our nation and put our country back to its path of achieving what its meant to be - Wawasan 2020.

I might be off topic but...oh well
keep up the good work, Che Det. You have been striving for the rights of the Malays since you were young and still keeping it up till now! How dare the critics said you were doing the opposite right now. Don't ever give up Tun! There are lots out there who continues to give their utmost support to you, cheering you again and again.

Please keep on doing what you think best for the nation

Dear Tun,

First of all, welcome to the blogosphere. It's refreshing to engage the nation's leadership (both present and former) directly as opposed through the Main Stream Media (MSM).

Regarding your account on the Judicial reforms, you brushed off the government's co-operation with the opposition as a sign of weakness. You made various point to support your opinion. Fair enough, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

If I may provide you with a counter argument, then here it is: The government consists of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. The executive branch's purpose is to execute the will of the people with the approval of the parliament, the legislative branch.

The judicial branch interprets the laws enacted by the legislative branch, and to ensure that the actions of the executive branch does not contravene the constitution - which by the way, is a contract between the government and its patron, the people.

By working together with the opposition, the government is merely exercising its duty to the public - as to the motive, I would say that they would not help regain the people's trust, well not yet anyway.

The legislative branch of government has the responsibility to scrutinize the actions of the government, if not their judgment. When all these measures fail, the people have the right to express their displeasure of the government's performance through elections - whose sole purpose is to renew the contract between the former and the later.

Having said that, the subjugation of the judicial branch of the government in the 80s and 90s (and sadly in the first decade of the 21st century), coupled with the dysfunctional Parliament in providing any meaningful debate on issues relevant to the public – since the laws can be enacted by the whims and fancies of the Cabinet and not the Parliament itself, with members of the Cabinet left off the hook from any oversight Parliament should provide – concocted the perfect storm we’ve seen in the last election.
The people have spoken. And the current prime minister was gracious enough to except both the defeat and the blame the BN members, especially the so called omnipotent UMNO, wants to pin on. To his credit, the BN seemed to realise that the will of the people

Had the BN railroaded the will of the people like some despots do in other third world countries, there would have been another May 13th, albeit this time the non-Malays would have called for an emancipation – an emancipation from all the wrong policies that the government BN instituted since the 70s.

It happened in 1969 and again in March 2008 with one distinct disparity in the outcome – the former was a political will of one community that was disgruntled with the Federal government, the latter, the entire spectrum of Malaysian community, regardless of race and religion.

The reason for this shift in voters’ will? The reasons are many, but its origins: you Tun, it’s as simple as that. When you came into power, you had this singular vision for this country, eliciting the will of the people. You had the power to change not only the socio economic structure of this country, but more importantly, the political structure as well. While I won’t argue against most of the socio economic platform you’ve introduced to our country, I will however touch upon the political platform we, the younger generations have inherited from you, our modern day political progenitor.

During the 80s judicial crisis, you’ve had the opportunity to change the system which now proved to be out of touch with the will of the people, especially the minorities. But efforts to change it meaningfully in the Parliament were subsequently met with failures, arguing that Malay rights were non-negotiable. No one’s arguing about the Malay rights enshrined in the constitution. But that’s not a blank cheque for the government to trample the minority’s rights either. If your answer to criticism is to bulldoze dissent like you did countless time over the period of two decades, all you’re going to get is blowback (the term the CIA refers to when its dirty work results in retaliation against Americans, like the attacks on Sept. 11) from the people, even if the plan takes decades to flourish. Thus today we’ve a judiciary which have no powers to question even the head of the government – hence the rampant corruption among the leaders the people signed the contract with.

No, Tun. The very same judiciary people had hope to seek salvation in this country was long ago, stripped of its powers to defend the weak and powerless. The way forward was chosen by the people – to ignore it is to repeat the mistakes we so painfully learn and ignore from history.

What the people want from the new government (all three branches I’ve mentioned above, but primarily the executive and legislative branches) is that there be some form of accountability that’s been recklessly tossed out of the window in your two decades of premiership.

The lesson the present government can learn: the people will no longer give them the free ride enjoyed by previous government. The government needs to be accountable for its actions, yet already the future leader of this country is ignoring this stark truth. It’s a matter of basic principles of the government I mentioned above, which is oversight – so that no one branch of the government could reign without the necessary checks and balances, and thus, sowing the seeds of discords that spawned the perfect in first place.

Yet it did not occur to me that you’ve got no such grasp of the basic concept of good governance – even for a veteran politician.

I believe that a multi parti system in any developed/developing nation is healthy and importnt for the growth of the country and her people.

However, when you have domination and power hungry folks running the government and use the ISA and have gag orders on the freedomn of the press, the country will not benefit nor grow!

People should be allowed to express their opinions and be allowed to voice the opinions in public without fear of the ISA knocking on their door.

In Malaysia, BN (so called party of the people) has been in power since Independece. This is not healthy and the fear that BN had instilled in the people kept it in power.

I am glad that the citizens had the guts to vote the way they did in the recent polls. BN is a facade for freedom and what it stands for.

Najib should not be the next PM. Look at his dad's records for crying out load. People who remember May 13 of 1969 should know better then let that person be the next PM. Why can't a non muslim be a PM or a DPM?

Can Malaysia EVER get to that point? Not in my life time and not with BN in power!

Dear Tun,

Great that we now have a direct link to the one who put Malaysia on the global map. Even the Aseans consider you Tun as " their' leader for when you speak you have no fear no favor. I can vouch that for sure. I was in Jakarta for a good 15 years, and I was proud of my Malaysia, her Prime Minister, his views, and his visions. When I made my annual trips home, I saw people of all races proudly flew the Malaysian flag and I knew that that's because we have had a great leader manning the beloved country.

Now, it's a different story, a totally different picture.

We've lost our pride of the nation.

Whatever we have left are the remnants and after-effects of your previous administration Tun.
But some people dared to make it sound that these are all 'their' achievements, refer to the last Barisan campaign.

It's your fine visions, your bold take-risk gambles that made Malaysia, and her people(during your time) standing tall. I meant everyone, including those who have been negative about you, your critiques; way deep inside their hearts they were proud of Malaysia.

In a multi-racial society like ours, they are times when we need to just 'bulldoze; decisions that we make.

Otherwise it's a free for all, just like today.

A strong government on the outside need to have one voice.

Otherwise, it'll be a bad
off-rythm choir, like today.

A bold country need to reinvent herself with forward visions.

Otherwise, it'll be like now.

( As a matter of fact, AAB just threw on the table if Malaysia should go back into 'Agriculture' re the shortage of rice and the rest)

And his deputy will argueably agree, no questions asked being a good follower.

So much about leaders with vision.
And a short-sighted one at that!

Tun, unfortunately leaders after you have no class. None at all.

They are all busy craving for their status, big black Alphards and hurrying their deposits in the bank.

And dare to stand and hide behind
Putra Jaya, the Twin Towers, the Sepang F1 circuit,KLIA to name but a few.

That's worrying us as citizens of the once shining Malaysia.

Unlike your time, my business friends are now talking about the current Malaysia just like Indonesia during her final years before the Asian financial crisis. I know the future generation, my kids; will be paying dearly for all these, just like our neighbor is now experiencing. Escalating cost from all sectors, taxes, food, petrol, electricity, water atcetra. Basic stuff included.

Where does Malaysia stand without you?

We'll still be nudging and hedging in Subang International. We'll still be racing at pot-holed Batu Tiga. We'll still be planting Paddy at the former race course.

And foreigners will still be asking,
" Where? Malaysia? Is it near Vietnam? No. It's near Bali"!

In short, multiracial Malaysia needed a strong gevernment alright.
But, we need to start by having a strong leader. In UMNO. As our political system starts there, with this party. The PM and DPM seats.

This current ones are nothing near you Tun.
All theories from the start. The Islam Hadhari that is not.(As to why do we need another label for Islam beats me, I have eyes you know I can see, I have ears you know I can hear. No I do not but I did. No I won't but I will! The list goes on. The buck stops there.

But brains, has he got one?

I doubt! Very much.

A weak government is not good for multiracial Malaysia?

Let start with a weak leader for that.

Like now.

Thanks for all the good memories Tun.
Thanks for all your forward vision.
Thanks for all your voice to the world.
Thanks for being the true leader of Malaysia. One who really moved the country forward, until the next station.

From then on, we'd like to erase them from our memories.
Because from the day you stepped out of the train, nothing moved.

No lights. No Sirens.

Only humss.

And loads of passengers.

Salam,

Assalamualaikum Tun, walaupun terlambat blog ni sikit tapi 'better late than never'. IMHO, weak or strong government does not soley signify by the majority it holds. The previous term government can also be considered as weak although it held 2/3 majority, since how it behaved had been translated into the recent election outcome. Strong leader does not necessarily need 2/3 support as majority of the rakyat will support whoever doing the right thing and doing it right. I think majority of Malaysian do not align themselves to any political parties or being influenced by the political belief of any parties. Whoever can take care of the country will be likely preferred and chosen to run the government. What we need is a strong and united Malaysia which in turn will make a strong government, it has to work both ways. Then without doubt we will have a strong nation. (Tun is a person who able to make Malaysian proud of being Malaysian.)

Please Tun, hope you will write more for the normal rakyat and do not sound so vindictive.

Cheers.

A Weak Goverment adakah bermaksud...

Wouldn't you agree that the problems that you now highlight were caused by you? Yes, you were / are a role model for many but definitely there were a lot of things that you did during your tenure as PM that does not go down well with everyone and has created a lot of issues with the rakyat. Perhaps the most obvious was your choice of successor. Was he really the best that you could have chosen to lead our wonderful country?

Dr. Mahathir

Appreciate you welcome healthy debate

IMHO, The strongest government can't govern a country forever if people wanted the change/improvement (especially non race-based politic). It is better for the country to have matured colour-blind people who DON'T FIGHT for their own race only, but for ALL. Doctor, It’s time for you if you could help the country to remove that fear after 39 years, you can be a big helping hand and remembered by the people forever.

Why opposition is always a enermy ? If opposition supports the government bill/move, should they being perceived as traitor by their supporter? This country is belonged to the people, not politician. They are elected by people as representative just like a CEO of company, the owner don’t want a “strong” CEO who can make changes in company policy over night.

If government is making a good change, if the opposition opposed them for the sake of oppose, the people will JUDGE them and vote them out in next GE. When a government change the system for the people, it is BETTER than NEVER. Everybody has their own interpretation of democracy, but most of decent people know when a government or opposition making a good decision/move, people praise them, and whack them badly when the government/opposition doing it for their own interest or the worst case, EGO. Politician/party also need appreciation/praise, we should not simply criticize for the sake of doing it.

People respect a good government, not to fear it because it is “strong”. In fact lot of people do not agree it was a STRONG government in the past, but a dictator one.

Cheers

It has been 2 months since the ruling coalition got its biggest slap but yet they yearn to cling to power. Don't they have the slightest dignity left in them?

Haven't they learnt their lesson? After all this time, is it now after the 8th of March that the so called leaders want to improve? What have they been doing for all the years that they have been in power?. Just go figure!

Asslamualaikum my dear Tun M,
A weak government is definitely not good for multi-racial Malaysia. As a matter of fact, it's not good for any country at all.
However, in a multi-racial society, it is a very dangerous situation as the government of the day will tend to please their own ethnic race for their support and marginalize the other races. This will breed extremist and hard liners within the government which will destabilize the country.
I strongly agree and believe what you said some time ago about the Iraq situation. Sometimes, a benevolent dictator is better for a country then a democratic one. The dictator can enforced laws and peace in the country whereas a democratic one will breed extremist and chaos within the country.
In our multi-racial Malaysia, I think we need a strong leader whom not many would dare to challenge. You, my dear Tun was that desirable leader, and for that you were called a "dictator" by some governments and other quarters. But your hard handed ways works! Many Malaysian understood your actions or inactions as it was for the good of the country. But for the others, they called you all sorts of names and accuses you of...well..many other things. I understood why you tried (unsuccessfully) to relinquished your premiership back then at that faithful UMNO general assembly..Many around you broke down and cried when you made that announcement and I, watching it on the TV, cried along with them. You my dear Tun, has that effect on most Malaysian. You were strong in your governance, but you did it for our country. The pressure and burden of being strong is never ever easy, and it takes a tremendous toll on any one person.
I look at our present PM and can’t help but wonder whether he ever truly understood why you, my dear Tun, was at times so heavy handed in governance? I believe, in our troubled times and multi-racial realities, our country need a very strong government with a “benevolent dictator” at the helm. After all, we are not quite ready for full democracy for some quite time to come. The city folks might think they are ready, but our grassroots still have a long way to go. Mindset takes time to change and to accept changes.

Dear Tun Dr Mahathir, no doubt you were contributed to modernise Malaysia from a rural country, but you are the one who setted alot racist policies which caused to the seperation of Malaysian. Malaysian will never be united due to those useless policies. And now the biggest politics party of Malaysia keep playing around with racist issues in order for a small group of people become richer and richer. And the biggest politics party of Malaysia keep hurting their friends in the country. Racist policy will only bring the country to death.

Tun,

If you are really concern about the country and the future of the people, you should ask the biggest politics party in Malaysia to stop playing around with racist issues and stop hurting other races, stop all the racist policies instead of asking the government to step down.

Tun,

Today's government inherite alot from what you had been doing during your time, you could not blame them, because they learn from you and they are learning fast. If you want to correct the wrong, please correct yourself.

To all Malaysian,
We should stand together, hold hands together, move togeher against those useless policies for a better future. We should stop the biggest politics party from ruling the country in the next election and we should fight for One Nation, One Malaysian and Ketuanan Rakyat.

Dear Tun,

I can't remember when I was started to observe the government issues. It was never happened before when Tun as the PM before. Myself and my family are so piece in mind. But, now we have to worry to tomorrow what are the price gonna be increase?

Is it because of the new parliment? For my opinion, the changes of our parliment structure might make many foreign investor worry, such as stabilization of the country. I still remember many Japanese invested in Malaysia because of you- Tun.

I think opposition taken over the roll in parliment is not come from civilian intention. But, it is a pressure of inflation. Probably cruel oil price shoot sky high has put many burden in our government. But, as the country leader, I think they should not think for a few decades planning..

I believed Tun always know that China has many natural resources spot and yet to start exploit. I think this giant country wanted to monopoly the world natural resource after few decades later. Our current country leader vision is not far-sighted enough.

Anyway, I strongly believe Malaysia still having chance to change. Hopefully, we still have chance to see the changes happened but not to late.

Dear Tun,

You quoted that "The party does not belong to Dato Seri Abdullah alone. Nor is it meant to support him as leader even when he mishandled the elections and the country. The party does not belong to me either. It belongs to all its members. Presently the members are not permitted to be critical. They can merely say yes to what Dato Seri Abdullah says or does."

It seems that you have forgotten how you work while you runs the seat back then. It sounds more like you rather than Pak Lah. As for me, i think Pak Lah just being so soft.He wanted a concept with a free democracy but then end up people turning back from him.

Furthermore issues have been fired up by oppositions, taken advantage of the cyber net. It's the trend now, everyone read blogs and it has been years the opposition start it before appeared blogger from govt. site..However all of it end up a disappointing outcome.Ali Rustam blog, Khir Toyo blog..

It was great now, opposition gaining more supporters. It should open everyone eyes especially the govt. However,i agreed with you Tun, we might need something more to lead a multiracial country. There was something missing that needs to recover. As for me i hope your criticism against Pak Lah was sincerely done, not because you have something out of it. I really respect you, as a Malaysian legendary leader..you always were. I hope i can just stick it that way..

Dearest Tun,

Syabas!! Very interesting blog and another URL landed in my ‘favourite’ for daily consumption. My family is your admirer, especially my wife and in-laws. Don’t anyone dare mention any ill-words against you, they will ‘brush’ them hard.

Well, my only comment pertaining to subject matter is that YOU, dearest Tun, have left a vacuum the moment you decided to step-down and past the leadership to Pak Lah. No one in present UMNO group of leaders can emulate you. No one in present UMNO group of leaders can inspire and instil the spirit of loyalty and trust among members. I don’t know what is left in UMNO and very worried with the rising of Anwar Ibrahim’s popularity with his PR…. and Times has put him as among the top 100 influential men in the world… (errr well another propaganda from the West to indirectly provide helping hand putting indirectly strong recognition “for within to consume and for outside to acknowledge..??”).

Thus, with Anwar getting stronger each day with the supports from “within” and “outside”, aren’t there any leaders in UMNO today to counter him and as influential as him??? Can you dear Tun provide guidance and advice as how the VACUUM left by you be filled?? Otherwise, UMNO will continue to lose directions and persistent blaming game for the poor 8 Mar 2008 GE results remain till next GE when Malaysian will witness UMNO & BN becoming opposition in parliament.

I believed many UMNO members and leaders as well as those from BN alike are reading this blog and visitors’ comments. I wish to propose that Pak Lah, UMNO & other BN leaders should open-up and invite you with honour, an elder statesman with 22 years of governing experience to come forward as advisor to the present government and be appointed as something-liked senior minister in the PM’s office. YOU have to somewhat fill the vacuum and do the rakyat a great favour by helping the present government to consolidate before UMNO and BN potentially become opposition in the next GE and rakyat feel that AI is the only available PM for Malaysia.

Thank you for your valuable time reading my little piece, and appreciate your generous response.

Dear Dr. M,

As much as we wish to see a strong government, I have always have that fear that power tends to corrupt and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.

The British when drafting the Constitution definitely did not think that a race-based single party could be in power for over half a century with 2/3 majority all the time, or else, perhaps 'unanimous' rather than '2/3 majority' would have been preferred in order to amend the Constitution.

We younger generation have a mind of our own and will no longer believe in whatever the power that be wants us to believe hook line and sinker. The recent GE has partially confirm this (and obviously other reasons for the tsunami was due to the corruptions, arrogance and incompetency of the government).

The Opposition in those 5 States will continue to be in power for a long time to come. Terengganu is soon going to follow suit.

So, what is BN gonna do, dissolve the Parliament and call for an election as soon as possible right after 3 years to prevent the Oppositions from achieving too much?

In a multi-racial country like ours it will be disastrous if we practise a totally western styled democracy. Our people have not reached a stage where we can be classified as fully developed country. We are not yet having a fully civilised society of the first order. Our society is still fragmented very deeply into various racial, cultural and religious line. We are not fully united and we just cannot claim ourselves to be fully Malaysian. The majority of us still claim what race we are first and then only call ourselves Malaysian second. As long as this attitude continues to exist it is rather difficult for us to practise a totally western styled democracy. So the best and safest ideology for our country to follow at this moment of time is to apply "Guided Democratic Principles" to suit our political environment of a multi-racial society. In the final analysis, as what you comment Tun, I totally concur with you that we simply cannot afford to have a very weak government in a multi racial country. This is a reality and we simply cannot deny it. The rationale is that certain opposition parties will take advantage of the situation for their own vested interest to project their own agenda and as a result a weak government could not focus its energy to move forward to develop our country. A weak government will only be concentrating on how to strengthen its political base rather than anything else. This is what happens now within the ruling party UMNO.

Dear Tun,
A weak government definitely not good for any country, not only for multi-racial Malyasia due to the instability politic. However, a strong government is definitely good if the government served what the Rakyat Really Need, not what the government need.
Either 2/3 majority if not the issue if we have Constructive Opposition Party who will support the government amendment if it really Good for the Rakyat regardless of the political view.
The question here is do we have Constructive Opposition here?!
If we have, I think it is not an issue...

Salam sejahtera Tun.

Base on record, a government with 2/3rd majority is too powerful for any check by the people, ngo or oppositions.

For eg. when everyone is against the idea of amending the laws to extend Rashid's job, they went ahead with it.

The best government is not a government who can simply change the laws at its whims and fancy.

Sincerely RahmanSadat

Yes, logically saying... "giving in" to the opposition by working with them is a "bad" thing for the Federal government.. but do correct if i'm wrong... should a government work for the better of the nation??? "dicdating of the parliament is not a good thing. Yes, you can passed laws and ammendments easier but it doesnt really give it a through debate as u said so, for the past decades, the federal gov always dominate two-third of the government.
Bless u.. Being a Federal Government, it DOES show a strong government, but does a strong government promise a fair and just representative of the whole nation?? I say naught..
A person doesnt grow through a bed of roses.. One matures through hardships..

I've always respect you rationale in terms of what should be done in the prospects of this country... But denying the fact that the nation is telling enough is enough by voting to the Opposition is truly obvious.. I'm not saying the Opposition is doing much with their seats but the voice is clear.. we need a change...

Asslamualaikum Tun,

Let me firstly say that I agree wholeheartedly that a weak government is bad for any country, let alone multi-racial country. Specially a young country like Malaysia. I know better because I come from a region where even though we are of the same race, language, and religion, we still find reasons to fight each other. Iraq is a good example of this. Under Saddam, though brutal as he was, the people of Iraq were much better off than now under their very weak government, taking into account that they are under occupation. I am not saying that Malaysia is heading to that direction, God forbid, you are too civil and wise not to risk it all in the name of democracy.

While I do believe that the Government is weak, I do not think that the Opposition in Malaysia is strong. In fact I think that the Opposition has more than is not common with each other that anything that is common. I think we will not have to wait too long to see one battle after another between PAS and DAP as both parties could not be different from each other. Good marriages sometime do not last, let alone marriages of convenience.

I have always believed that a strong opposition is good in any country. But is it possible to have a strong opposition without having a weak government?

Unknown said...

Dear Tun,

Welcome to the blogosphere.

I do not entirely subscribe to your view that a 2/3rd majority of parliament is the key definition of strong government. Additionally amending constitution isnt a task to be taken lightly in any form of governance.

I would think a strong government will comprise of people of the highest quality and integrity and exclude those that have the propensity to act and behave like clowns.

Even the government ( of your leadership ) has it's fair share of clowns and jesters ; perhaps even a few dubious characters.

A strong and quality opposition is necessary - 1/3 in parliament or otherwise.

My main concern for our country is that the government and a number of it's apparatchiks are behaving and sounding out policies as if we are living under fascism.

Just read and listen what Jakim and some of the muftis and even members of the royal families are saying. It makes you wonder whether some of them were Mussolini or Muawiyah in a previous life.

To me, Badawi's biggest blunder is introducing Islam Hadhari - and attempting to use that notion as the base principles of governing this country.

And you will know very well that any neo-theocratic concept or even just a slight notion of it, is a very dangerous thing.
When theocracy becomes a discourse in the mainstream : there will be no turning back and pretty soon anyone will start testing the borders of talibanism.

On that score : if we has had a stronger opposition : Badawi wouldnt be too brave to " initiate the destruction of a secular Malaysia ".

Tun, while at times you had the make up of a fascist - and if I may suggest - your next big task is to "clean up the UMNO and other Malay politicians " - as this country is showing all the signs of turning herself into a religious fascist one.

To my mind - Tun is one of the very few individuals that is capable of arresting this trend and bring us back to the road of modernism and a secular one at that.

Best regards

Jeff

i agrees with you. in fact i think that racial bias would ri=uin the country. the country is a multi-racial country. if racial bias exist, how would our copuntry be unites.
in addition, the investment of the foreigner had decreased due to the bias problem. the foreigner doesn't like to invest in the so call "bumiputera "company because they are aware of the effect of aving at least 70%of malay. in fact, they prefer multi-racial company.

another thing i'm sure that the country would prosper if we eliminate racial-bias for the country is based on multicultural.

if racial bias reduce, then all the race can focus into making a perfect malaysian culture.

Malaysian political system is not matured yet. The Malaysian political system is was worsened since your regime (Dr Mahathir) until now (Pak Lah). The major problem is not about whether government is weak without 2/3 majority, but the real problem is with the political system in Malaysia itself. The problems vary in few factors that are:
a) The system- our constitutions are based on the British political system. We were not built our own constitution based on our culture, but based on the imperial British 50 years ago. This is the way western countries indirectly invade us by installing the political system (democracy is the best-bull shit) in Malaysian political system.
b) The government- the government is playing with fire when the concept of Barisan Nasional is introduced in politics. The compromises between each races based on the social contract is not relevant anymore. The multiracial citizens in Malaysian are more segregated and the unrest feeling between each races (Malays, Chinese, Indians) can stimulate hatred and envious between each races. The problem is because each races are not sharing the same aspiration (to become Malaysian Malaysia), yet they all have their own agenda based for the sake for their own races.
-the government (cabinet) control of important keys of the constitutional government. The keys are the judiciary system, the Agong, and also mass media.
c) Citizens- The Malaysian are not well-educated enough in politics. They have been bribed by government with subsidies and a little progress in Malaysian economics (mass media also-bloody utusan and tv3). They are not reformed yet to evaluate the best government to be chosen. I call this ‘politik kampong rakyat Malaysia’.
Please feel free to add me in msn messenger…pooteen_star@hotmail.com…….to whoever wants to discuss with me about Malaysian political system.

Assalamualaikum Tun,

Benar seperti kata Tun..kita sering lupa sejarah..tetapi saya bersikap Yakin Boleh...Kita mampu mengatasinya.....asalkan jangan berputus asa...

The combination of a strong (two-thirds majority) Government and an Opposition with the capacity and willingness to check abuses by the Government would serve Malaysia well.

---------------------------------

You are wrong and contradicting yourself! It doesn't take a genius to look back at the first term of AAB and see that absolute power corrupts absolutely! There's no such thing as having a strong 2/3 majority govt and a strong opposition. The only way a govt can be strong is IF the ruling party and opposition put aside all their politicking and work for the people.

Sabahan said...

Dear Tun,

With all due respect, I wish to put forward my simple views. I respect what you have done for our country, and have often kept in mind that you are probably half a good man. I understand that you favour a authoritarian flavoured democracy, as your past leadership has shown.

In my opinion, the current scenario is not going to weaken Malaysia. It will only weaken the current government, which in many cases cannot be equated with Malaysia as a whole. I believe we will grow stronger from this inevitable transformation. For many years, the government has been leading with a sense of decision based on what THEY think is good for the people. It has always been a one sided argument. This breeds incompetent decision making. Just look at the number of times our constitution has been amended, compared to the Americans. I say good riddance.

I believe in the principal of balance. And I believe in the ability of Malaysians to make collectively matured decisions. I long for the day when the leaders stop repeatedly telling me to be patriotic to my country, and at the same time equate that patriotism with loyalty to the government.

When will we realize that Malaysia is bigger than just some petty political bickering, partisan politics and the bigoted racial point of views of some our leaders?

The days when leaders give fishes to the people are over. It seems that Malaysians have learned to fish on their own.

Just my 2 cents.

Regards.

A weak government does it means by a government that does not have a 2/3 majority?? I don't agree with this.

Our previous BN government has won a 2/3 majority but still, they're as weak as ever. So weak that everyone can never understand what are these minister singing all the way without thinking of what are they talking and giving comment. They're weak because they cannot perform the country well, they're weak because they gain too much power and become corrupt without people stopping them, they're weak because of many other reason but not because of the 2/3 majority..

Tun, please clarify it on my humble comment.

Dear Tun Dr. M,

I agree with you that a weak government is not good for a multi-racial Malaysia. But what good is strong governance when the people that are running it cannot show credibility and competence? The people voted for strong governance in 2004, what we got in return was a teddy bear, and the 08 election results really showed the disappointment of the people.

I am in favor of the current shake-ups, with the hope that after these trying times the the future government (whoever takes the helm) will be a strong one.. of course, with a respectable opposition that serves to always challenge any wrongdoings by the gov't.

Quote Allen "A weak Government is not good for Multi-racial malaysia but a corrupt one is far more worst than that."

sepatutnya bincang lah sesama, macam mana nak cari cari duit lebih supaya kalau harga minyak naik pun taklah ketara sangat susahnya. harga beras naik 50 sen tapi kalau dah 10 kg, tentulah rm5.
Tahu tak hari ni, kat luar sana tu orang lain dah start speculate harga minyak mentah akan naik lagi sampai usd250 by next year!!!!!

Dr. Mahathir is the type of leader you love and hate. I do admire the great things he done for us

...................................
Politically, the opposition is the enemy.

If your view on opposition as the enemy then it’s logical to considered the Malaysian citizen that voted for Pakatan Rakyat is the enemy too? Hence, does that mean it’s justifiable to ignore another 50% of Semanjung Malaysian that voted for Pakatan Rakyat. As a politician, you should realized that nobody is your enemy. They should be viewed as your partner that have different views. A talented politician would know how to work with the opposition party towards creating a stronger country.

In history, we’ve seen people with absolute power abused their power albeit their earlier intention was to protect the people. We can learn that from the Chinese dynasty.
...................................
Being forced to work with the opposition is not undemocratic but it shows up the weakness of the Government.

Then a logical question would be why the government is weak? Is the government weak because of their inability to govern the people fairly? Could it be the government wasn’t efficient enough to distribute the wealth fairly? Is it because the government was too corrupted? Thus, it resulted the people voted for the opposition.

..................................
A weak government is not good for multi-racial Malaysia. It leads to unwarranted challenges against its authority. Governments cannot please everybody.

Dear. Dr. Mahathir you’ve underestimate Malaysian. We’re very accommodating people. I’m a Malaysian Chinese and I too understand there is always give and take. I believe majority of us understand this concept. In Malaysia regardless of race or religion, all of us want peace and prosperity.
...................................
If a Government cannot be firm and is forced to flip-flop there will be a lack of confidence which does not augur well for the smooth implementation of policies or project. Some people might already have noticed this.

You’re correct about it. But if the government were to put forth good policy that will benefits majority of the people then I don’t foresee the government having any problem. Currently, the government is facing the problems because they seek not to work with the Pakatan (that’s my view which might be bias). Nevertheless, BN have been in government since independence and our achievement is much less than the tiny Singapore. It’s always an eyesore for me that Malaysia can never achieve economically better than Singapore. I see the reason for us not able to surpass Singapore economically because our government is too corrupted.
...................................
In today's context, the Federal Government is unable to initiate necessary changes to the constitution and would be held to ransom every time.

Isn’t that great? This means the non-Malay or the Malay would not have the political power to change the constitution as they like. As of now, the constitution protects the bumiputra; hence, bumiputra should not fear the non-bumiputra from usurping the power from. Then again, I do believe the bumiputra has the same caliber as the non-bumiputra. As a student in USA, I’ve seen bumiputra that work as hard as non-bumiputra. Also, we should see ourselves as Bumi and non-bumi. I’m third generation Malaysian Chinese that only wish we can make this a better country together. This is a globalization economy which is going to be tough for Malaysian if we don’t work together facing this obstacles.
..................................
One of the most important things about a two-thirds majority is that there would be hardly any threat of defection. Today we hear of this threat everyday. The leadership of the Barisan Nasional is like a cat on hot bricks. And cats on hot bricks cannot achieve anything.

Why should we be afraid of the MPs from switching party if we selected the right people running for parliament? I don’t foresee such problem in United States or United Kingdom. Is it because Malaysians that ran for office for personal benefits (money)? If BN or PR chooses the right candidate we wouldn’t have such problem already.
...................................
Previous Federal Governments had never failed to obtain the two-thirds majority. As a measure of strength, a two-thirds majority allows a Government to do everything on its own and be totally independent.

Total independent and choose to take away all our hard earned money to benefit only the few. If the government were really intended to enrich the bumiputra they would have created high quality tertiary education. With quality education, this would have helped all Malaysian regardless of race or religion. Also, if the government would really love fellow Malaysian the government would work towards building up Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan economy.
...................................
The question is why now? Why not when the Government had 90 percent majority after the General Election of 2004? Changes to the way judges are picked could have been done after the 2004 resounding victory.

Because the BN loose its two-third majority, they want to win back the voters heart. Hence, having opposition party would force the government listen to the people. If the government do a good job for this few years I’m certain we’ll vote for BN again.
..................................
I have always been of the opinion that this country must have a strong and independent Federal Government which can then serve the country and people without fear or favour.

Very true but I was disappointed with you. You could have been a better leader that I love. Needless to say, you’re still a leader I respect.
...................................
But I have been on record in advocating a strong opposition. This is to ensure the Government does not stray from the right path, or abuse its authority. The combination of a strong (two-thirds majority) Government and an Opposition with the capacity and willingness to check abuses by the Government would serve Malaysia well.

I don’t think a good government needs to have two-thirds majority. If the policies are based on sound facts, it should not be too difficult to garner votes from the other side.
...................................
As to the Government's latest proposal to set up a judicial commission, is it because it now thinks it is a good thing or is it a desperate attempt to win back the support it has lost?

We all know the real reason my dear Tun.
...................................

Well said my beloved leader, you’ve every right to say anything you like. This is your country and mine too.

Lastly, a weak government is bad for the country but a corrupted government would bring disaster to the country. What we need is to create more fellow Malaysian with tertiary education. Only then, our country can prosper. This means we need to revamp Malaysia education. The quality of the education in our country has been going down hill and this is going to be obstacles for Malaysia to progress towards WAWASAN 2020.

Dear Dr. M, Firstly I would like to congratulate you on your blog as I have been waiting so long for this. It's nothing like experiencing this first hand than going thru interpretations of the media.

"A Weak Government is not good for Multi-racial Malaysia" is very much true but I would prefer it to be "A Weak Government is not good for the Nation".

I just don't know why the current government can't accept the fact that they lost quite a huge number of seats and that they are Cocky (and people punish them for it). So far, I only see MCA realised what their mistakes are, but the other component parties seems to be in their own world. To win back all those seat that they have lost now takes a huge task, and it involves going to the ground and know what is the real root cause and being humble.

Another thing that I don't understand the current government is, why did they stop your big projects? Looks like instead of heading toward Wawasan 2020, they have stop and celebrated their success with Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang. Seems to me like, they have counted the chickens even before the eggs hatches.

I am sorry to see us in this state and sorry to tell you that your succession plan just didn't work. Nobody in UMNO seems to have what it takes to be a Prime Minister including Pak Lah.

Anyway, I hope you consider writing about helping the middle class and the poor in this period of rising cost/ inflation.

Any way starting this blog must really be a pain for you, to read through over 200 postings and over 1k previous one. Do take care of your health.

My take on strong and weak governments is, the setup of our election process will not inherently produce a strong government even if the party wins by 90% of the seats. In terms of actual votes casted in its favour, it is way less at perphas 60% or so. A good eg is the just concluded election where BN lost its 2/3. In the peninsular, the oppostion apparently got more of the votes casted than BN and even taking into account Sabah & Sarawak, BN only managed to garner less than 60% overall. How can the government of the day be strong when a big minority did not believe in them?

Give us a system that truly reflects the ruling government popularity, then it will be strong for it really have the people's suppport and not some inflated scores because of a creative marking format.

Maybe, it is not about a strong or weak government but a fair government who listens.

However, we need to strengthen the inter racial fabric of our nation as " A Strong United Multi Racial Malaysia is needed when govern by a Weak Government." And our contry should start by doing away with race profiling in all our official government documents as the first step to achieve a strong united multi racial Malaysia status.

Looking forward to your opinion on this.

Yours respectfully and thank you.

Dear Tun,

I do agree with your opinions even though I am neither BN nor opposition supporter.

Government without 2/3 majority is a weak government furthermore with the threat of defection, BN will be busy to win the its party members loyalty then serve the people and I can not imagine how much money will be used for that end.

On the attempts to set up judicial commission I do feel that it is nothing more then just a political gimmick to show that the new BN (without 2/3 majority)under Pak Lah is doing something about corruption and another cheap attempt to discredit your good name. I also felt that it has nothing to do with the rakyat.

For the rakyat, do not talk about judiciary (because we know it is way out of Pak Lah's league) but please talk about corruption in government agencies (also his family), the fuel increase and food increase.

Please share with us your thought on the issues of bumiputera and Palestine.

Hi Dr M,

I like to call u Dr M coz it's more closer to u.

I'm agree that the government is weak, i think is much much weaker than your leadership. But, good or bad for the multi-racial country,we can see on two different point of views:

1) Cabinet members for Chinese and Indians is weaker and lesser compare with previous time. One of the component party of BN (PGRM) is losing terrible in the general election. I don't know whether this party will appear in future or not. But for sure, Chinese is losing some place in the cabinet and state government. Losing Indians leader might be a good coz a lot people don't support him anymore, but without him, i think the Indian voice in the government is bit weaker.

2) A strong BN government which also means UMNO is become the largest party in government and almost monopolized the whole country. This issue also brought out by some media about the government NO NEED support from Chinese and Indians, coz Malay is the biggest majorities of the population. No people like to heard about it coz it's racial issue and can bring a bad relationship between 'rakyat'.

Lastly, I'm very appreciate that Dr M is spending time to write article and comment and listen from 'rakyat'. I hope other leaders from the government will also do the same to listen the 'rakyat' voice rather than fighting in the parliament.

What you mean when you say a weak Government is not good for multiracial Malaysia ?

A strong Government like what we had in 2004 to 1008 was also not good for multi racial Malaysia.

The Government did nothing to stop the atrocities against the minorities when they had an over whelming majority.

In a multi racial country you should have a strong opposition, not a storng Government........ or else the Government will do as itm pleases, like what you did during your time

I agree whole-heartedly with your entry, Dr M, but I think a bigger problem is that a racial-centric government, i.e. Malay-centric, is a bigger threat to the country as a whole.

And before any of the other posters start to cry blood and murder, let me assure you, I too am a Malay.

We Malays are way too weak because of our dependence on the government. Yes, I know, without government help, we're only going to be trodden down to nothingness but if anybody think that with the help, we're getting stronger, that person must be deluded. We didn't stop the process, we merely slowed it down.

Not only that, a lot of non-Malays that I know confessed that, though they're Malaysians, they do not feel that Malaysia is their own country. They feel like legal squatters, pendatang halal, if you please. Choosing the opposition was merely a choice between two evils. Choosing Keadilan over BN is merely hoping that Keadilan is more subtle in their racial-bias than BN.

I do not pretend to know how to fix this problem. I mean, take away the crutches and one will fall. Keep the crutches, others will suffer. Isn't there some kind of a proverbial physiotherapy to turn to?

Why I say so? cause this is depend on who is the commander.
If it's a weak commander then you are wrong cause the enemies will do the correct thing if the commander done wrong.
But if the commander is strong then you are right, cause what he is trying to do sure the enemy will defeat it. But in this case I don't thing the commander is strong cause if is strong then won't get this poor results in the previous general election.

Salam Tun,

After learning about the existence of your blog, i immediately opened it and read your post on the weak government, including some of the comments. Being one of the country's citizens, I just want to express some of my opinions, although I myself is not any political expert. Still, the sudden changes to the government attract my attention, leading me to ponder about what happen to Malaysia these days.

Being an overseas student, I've been exposed to new experiences, many of which I could always relate to issues involving Malaysia. Some of them are regarding religious matters, public amenities, people behaviours, environmental issues and many more. I wont comment on any of the issues, but comment on the current government.

Tun said that a 2/3 majority by the FG is important to establish a good government, and I strongly agree with that. Why? Because I think there is no way that a country with more than one leader will be able to strive. There will be clash of opinions, arguments and eventually leads to indecisiveness. Problems wont be solved, and more problems arise.

Being a Muslim, I try comparing the government we have today and the government led almost 1400 years ago, by our none other but Prophet Rasulullah S.A.W. What makes the government back then so strong, until it can widen the border so far, survive all sorts of attacks but the people still live in harmony? I believe these were achieved through passion and faith. The people back then have a very strong faith in their religion, Islam, thus making them passionate in defending it. Nothing that came could obstruct their passion and their faith.

What about our government now? Do they not have faith and passion? Is that why they fail to lead properly making people lose their trust. I believe yes, though it is not entirely true. From what i've seen, many of the leaders in BN or UMNO lack passion for their roles. Many of them want to gain title, being reps of this and that making them fight against each other, but for what purpose? Do they really care about gearing the government towards the better? They said they could do it better so choose them, but could they? Have they yield the best results in the position they're in at the moment? Can't they make more improvements without getting higher position?

I dont have the exact answer to all these but I believe, a great leader should have passion in his roles, regardless of the position they're holding. A passion to serve the people and providing them the best. By having this, nothing would stop them from moving forward. What our leaders have today is not passion, but greed for power, wealth and reputation. They get what they want, but the one’s suffering is the people, citizens, Malaysians! Leading a multi-racial country is hard enough, but instead of focusing on uniting the people, our leaders still fight for positions, pointing fingers and blaming others. Why? Lack of passion.

That is all i have to say. Thank you Tun for giving me the chance to voice out my thoughts, and congratulations on the opening of your blog. I hope you will continue to give constructive views and opinions, so the government can correct their mistakes and regain the people’s trust.

Malaysia Boleh!!! [Concern citizen, Hasif]

We are not a new born baby .It is because of your act previously and now had created such situation. A deep pesimistic view on the goverment's move will always be the people perception. All originated from your past dictatorship style of ruling.Your time has come where this new goverment will reveal any wrong doings in the past and like God's promise, no one will be spared. That include you.

ZORO said...

You can't always win. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise for BN, the people, and the country. No party is indispensable. People want to give a chance for themselves, and knowing well that a weak government can not do thing at wish like previously. They went for it for the future of their generation. The denying 2/3 of BN is just the fate of BN. The situation today is the "result" of what you did before; and it should be cyclical for any party too.
You can put the blame on yourself for not guiding UMNO leaders when you were at your highest influence. You could do only so much for them, and if they don't have any wisdom to rectify the wrongs, who else can? 2/3 majority means great power or authority, but if it’s in the wrong hand, people will suffer rather than gaining from it.
The day of consultative government has arrived and like it or not, UMNO and the rest of BN must accept it and work with good faith for the goods of the country. Therefore, transparency in the governance is the most pre-requisite for the success of this modern governance. BN, especially UMNO, must change your mindset completely. The world is flat now, so is Malaysia’s political scene. Simply blame Pak Lah for causing a weak government does not help solving the problem. An ideal leader is a cross between Mahatir and Pak Lah. Who are they?

Dear Tun Dr. Mahathir,

I agree with the notion that a strong and effective government is needed in a multiracial society like Malaysia.

Malaysia is one of the most complex countries in the world to govern. The plain truth is Malaysians are separated by race, language, religion, culture and ethnicity. Western-style liberal democracy based on consensus is almost impossible in such a scenario.

Where in the west, people debate about 'the common good', this may not be possible in Malaysia where sensitive issues of race and religion are concerned. Emotions still runs high over issues e.g. Lina Joy, demolition of Hindu temples etc.

As such, a strong and effective government can play the role of arbiter to decide on the best course of action. In the absence of such strong and effective government as arbiter, it will result in a free-for-all situation with no decision reached. If allowed to prolong, it could fester into tragic results.

Many may not agree with this by arguing that Malaysia has moved forward beyond race-based politics as demonstrated by the results of the last general election. I am not convinced. Looking at other countries separated by race/religion e.g. Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Palestine shows that more time and effort are needed if Malaysia is to move away from race-based politics, certainly more than the 50 years we had so far.

Until then, leadership by a strong, capable and stable government is needed to forge a truly united country where all will see themselves as Malaysian first and Malay,Chinese,Indian, Kadazan etc. second.

Just my humble thoughts.

Thank you

Respectfully yours to Tun Dr. Mahathir, I beleive you have the best answer already because you are a doctor in politics and in internationally qualified.

The word "Weak Government" is just the same like a "Weak Body". A weak body doesn't functions well, so it must be heal in order to strenghten it.

First of all, what have cause the body weak? Not taken care seriously? Abuse of health? Virus attacked? Maybe cancer in within too..

I was born in the 1970, since then I have recognise that Malaysia is in the fact a Multi-racial country. This we know and the Malaysian blood in in our stream but sad to say that after 38 years and reading in so many histories and news till today. Racist issue still exist.

How do we expect the body to be efficiently function without a the compromising and understanding to each of the organs and body parts? This you are super than us I believe in your knowledge.

As I always believe in you during your time is because you are a good Doctor and you make cure to your patient, just as what you did in handling politics for Malaysia not only within but also international.

If there is a cancer tumour in the government it must be removed immediately because it will spead out and weaken the body just as we see everyday now. Later it will be remove the body will die. This is what it is happening today. As ordinary rakyat we feels like getting a Chemotherapy treatment in our daily lifes, uncertainties and struggling hard to survive. Shouldn't the tumour be remove ASAP. We do not want a slow dying but atleast we want to try a new medicine which may boost up our immune system in the Government.

Our only new medicine is PR, that is what we believe and trusted in.

Many of us really missed you a lot no matter to your right and wrong doings. Your right ones we always appreciate in our hearts and your wrong ones we always will forgive. Truly and honestly.

You are a true character of good leadership which I ever know in the history of Malaysia. Your undying flames always reach your people's heart and globally.

May god bless you forever in your righteous and good health.

I still believe as long as you may give with a little helping hand you still can make Malaysia to become a better future. A better Malaysia for all racial in this new Era.
Together we unity and conquer, Apart we falls. Our true enemy is not within Malaysia but to the outside world.

I truly believe we need a strong opposition and an independent government. I think we should have only ONE opposition and a government ruled by ONE party.

Think the Republicans & the Democratics of the US. The Labor party & Liberal party of the Aus.

Take this for example,

"UMNO-led Barisan Nasional with its 13 coalitions where the vast majority of seats are held by MCA MIC and UMNO."

Why don't we just have a Barisan Nasional? Why the UMNO-led? Why the 13 coalitions? Why the race-based parties: MCA MIC UMNO?

Same goes for Pakatan Rakyat too.

Just a thought. I'm glad Tun has a blog too, shows us you really care about moulding our country to its best of its capability :)

Hi Tun Dr. M

"If you attain Enlightenment, one thousand things, ten thousand things become one; if you attain Enlightenment, one thousand things, ten thousand things each become clear. Which statement is correct?''

A student said, "They are the same.''

Soen Sa Nim said, ''You say the same, so I hit you. Not the same. Also not different. If you attain Enlightenment, one thousand things, ten thousand things become one. What does this mean?''

The student said, "No mind, no Buddha, it's all one.''

"Then what?'' The student hit the floor. "Only this?''

The student said, "Outside, the sound of cars.''

Soen Sa Nim said, "Correct. So attaining Enlightenment, not attaining Enlightenment, these are teaching words. These are only teaching words. Many people are attached to these words, so they don't understand truly attaining Enlightenment.

"Here is a kong-an about this. Someone once sat Zen for ten years; he was an old man. He had an interview with the Zen Master and said, 'Zen Master, I have a question. I have been sitting for ten years, but Enlightenment has not appeared.' The Zen Master said, 'You don't want Enlightenment, so it has not appeared.' 'No, no,' said the student, 'I want Enlightenment, but it hasn't appeared.' The Zen Master said, 'So, you want Enlightenment, so it has not appeared.'

"Then the Zen Master said, 'Go to the kitchen, drink cold water.' There is a simple custom in Korea, that when your mind is not clear, you go to the kitchen and drink cold water. So the student said, 'O.K., thank you very much,' and went away.

''This is a very short interview, but very important. Everything is in it. So this morning, if you have mind, only drink cold water, O.K.?''

One hundred years,
36,000 mornings.
Before, I am you.
Now, you are me.

Fighting Monkeys
Q: I want to ask you about the fighting at Chogye Sah Temple. You always talk about putting everything down, but on the television news we see pictures of Korean monks fighting with each other at Chogye Sah Temple in Seoul, the head temple of Korean Buddhism. Why are they fighting?

ZMSS: A long time ago in Korea a famous book appeared which predicted the fate of our country. The book said, "When true monks do not live in the temples anymore, only outside, [laughter] then it's the end of the world!" So, that means it is almost the end of our world.

Many religions are nowadays saying it's the "end of the world." That means there are too many human beings down here! Everybody understands: in 1945 there were two billion people in the whole world. Now, only fifty years later, there are over five billion people! All these consciousnesses come from where? All this is from animal consciousness. So today there is a lot of fighting everywhere--just like animals. In the old days--east or west, it didn't matter--people understood correct human being, correct parent, son and daughter, correct situation, condition and relationship. But now many people don't understand correct situation, correct function, correct relationship.

When I first went to America many of my students were hippies. They didn't like their parents. Long hair, long beard, dirty hat, dirty clothes, dirty shoes, no bath, everything dirty! Their parents didn't like that! What is good, what is bad? They didn't care. Back then all young people did together action: they slept together, ate together and took drugs together. They didn't like their parents, didn't like society, didn't like school, didn't like anything. That's the hippie mind. Now these hippies are almost 50 or 55 years old. [laughter] Now many of them have children too and...oh, the same thing! Being a parent means understanding this world, this recurring situation.

That was the time of the Vietnam war. Many people didn't like the war. They wanted to fix the world, but they didn't know how to fix it. Then the hippies grew up, and the same thing again! They still cannot fix the world; cannot make it correct.

Then slowly a new mind appeared and they began to understand what our world is like. They come to understand correct practicing. In the 70s many people were practicing yoga. But with yoga practice, your body is okay and your mind is pure, but the direction is not clear. Next, they became interested in meditation which gave them a peaceful feeling, or would maybe lead to special magical powers. Here also, the direction was not clear. So what to do? Then Zen Buddhism came to the United States and they said, "Aaaaahh!" The direction became clear: attain enlightenment, find the correct way, and choose correct life, save all beings. The Bible said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." The Christian point and Buddhism's point are the same point. Many younger people practicing at that time who had a hippie idea turned to Buddhism. What is the correct way? What is correct practice? Now, many people understand. Still, many people like magic and special things. But magic... okay, that's interesting, but can I attain my true self that way? Not possible! If you want to attain your true self and help this world, then come here and sit. Only go straight "don't know," don't make anything for ninety days, OK? That is most important! So, you are very lucky to come here to Shin Won Sah or Hwa Gye Sah to practice.

Tun,

Sejarah tamadun manusia sering memperlihatkan punca-punca kejatuhan sesuatu era.

Selepas Tun, kita masih ternanti-nanti.

Terima kasih.
