Oil Price

(VERSI BAHASA MALAYSIA DI AKHIR ARTIKEL INI)

The price of crude oil has increased by 400 percent in the last three years. It follows that the price of products must increase, sooner or later. In other countries petrol prices had already increased. In the United Kingdom one litre of petrol sells for more than one pound sterling or RM7. In the United States it is about RM5.

That the price in neighbouring countries has gone up is shown by the rush to fill up by Thai and to a lesser extent Singapore vehicles.

The Government has now announced an increase in petrol price by 78 sen to RM2.70 per litre, an increase of more than 40 per cent.

I may be mistaken but there seems to be less vehicles on the road today. But obviously that is not all that will happen. All other consumer goods, services and luxury goods would increase in price.

The cost of living must go up. Put another way there will be inflation and the standard of living will go down.

Obviously our increase in petrol price is far less than in the United Kingdom or the United States. But our per capita income is about one-third of theirs. In purchasing power terms our increase is more than in the UK or the US.

The increase hurts but the pain is greater not just because of the increase percentage-wise is higher than in developed countries but because of the manner the increase is made.

A few days ago the Government decided to ban sale of petrol to foreign cars. It flipped. Now foreign cars can buy again. Flopped.

Knowing that in a few days it was going to raise the price and foreigners would be allowed to buy, why cannot the Government just wait instead of banning and unbanning.

But be that as it may what could the Government have done to lessen the burden on the people that results from the increase in petrol price.

In the first place the Government should not have floated the Ringgit. A floating rate creates uncertainties and we cannot gain anything from the strengthened Ringgit. Certainly the people have not experienced any increase in their purchasing power because of the appreciation in the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Ringgit.

Actually the Ringgit has increased by about 80 sen (from RM3.80 to RM3.08 to 1 US Dollar) per US Dollar, i.e. by more than 20 per cent. Had the Government retained the fixed rate system and increased the value of the Ringgit, say 10 per cent at a time, the cost of imports, in Ringgit terms can be monitored and reduced by 10 per cent. At 20 per cent appreciation the cost of imports should decrease by 20 per cent. But we know the prices of imported goods or services have not decreased at all. This means we are paying 20 per cent higher for our imports including the raw material and components for our industries.

Since oil prices are fixed in US Dollar, the increase in US Dollar prices of oil should also be mitigated by 20 per cent in Malaysian Ringgit.

But the Government wants to please the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and decided to float the Ringgit. As a result the strengthening of the Ringgit merely increased our cost of exports without giving our people the benefit of lower cost of imports.

This is not wisdom after the event. I had actually told a Government Minister not to float the Ringgit three years ago. But of course I am not an expert, certainly I know little about the international financial regimes.

I believe the people expect the increase of petrol price. But what they are angry about is the quantum and the suddenness. The Prime Minister was hinting at August but suddenly it came two months earlier, just after the ban on sale of petrol to foreigners.

If the increase had been more gradual, the people would not feel it so much. But of course this means that the Government would have to subsidise, though to a decreasing extent.

Can the Government subsidise? I am the “adviser” to Petronas but I know very little about it beyond what is published in its accounts. What I do know may not be very accurate but should be sufficient for me to draw certain conclusions.

Roughly Malaysia produces 650,000 barrels of crude per day. We consume 400,000 barrels leaving 250,000 barrels to be exported.

Three years ago the selling price of crude was about USD30 per barrel. Today it is USD130 – an increase of USD100. There is hardly any increase in the production cost so that the extra USD100 can be considered as pure profit.

Our 250,000 barrels of export should earn us 250,000 x 100 x 365 x 3 = RM27,375,000,000 (twenty seven billion Ringgit).

But Petronas made a profit of well over RM70 billion, all of which belong to the Government.

By all accounts the Government is flushed with money.

But besides petrol the prices of palm oil, rubber and tin have also increased by about 400 per cent. Plantation companies and banks now earn as much as RM3 billion in profits each. Taxes paid by them must have also increased greatly.

I feel sure that maintaining the subsidy and gradually decreasing it would not hurt the Government finances.

In the medium term ways and means must be found to reduce wasteful consumption and increase income. We may not be able to fix the minimum wage at a high level but certainly we can improve the minimum wage.

Actually our wages are high compared to some of our neighbours. The investors who come here are attracted not by cheap labour but by other factors, among which is the attitude of the Government towards the business community and the investors in particular.

From what I hear business friendliness is wanting in the present Government – so much so that even Malaysians are investing in other countries. There are rumblings about political affiliations influencing decisions. Generally Government politicians are said to be arrogant.

Malaysia is short of manpower. The labour intensive industries are not benefiting Malaysians. Foreign workers are remitting huge sums of money home.

The industrial policy must change so that high tech is promoted in order to give Malaysians higher wages to cope with rising costs of living.

The world is facing economic turmoil due to the depreciation of the US Dollar, the sub-prime loan crisis, rising oil and raw material prices, food shortages and the continued activities of the greedy hedge funds. The possibility of a US recession is real. In a way the US is already in recession. The world economy will be dragged down by it.

Malaysia will be affected by all these problems. I wonder whether the Government is prepared for this.

We cannot avoid all the negative effects but there must be ways to mitigate against them and to lessen the burden that must be borne by all Malaysians. I am sure the Government will not just pass all these problems to the people as the review of oil prices every month seem to suggest.

Harga Minyak

Harga minyak mentah naik sebanyak 400 peratus sejak tiga tahun lepas.

US Dollar) satu US Dollar, melebihi 20 peratus.

Saya percaya umum terpaksa menerima kenaikan harga petrol.

Mampukah Kerajaan terus beri subsidi?

Sebenarnya pendapatan kita tinggi berbanding sesetengah jiran kita.

Sebenarnya Amerika Syarikat sedang mengalami kelembapan ekonomi.

Salam Tun..

Kenaikan harga minyak baru2 nie mmg terasa amat membebankan.

Assalamualaikum Tun, Saya masih muda semasa Tun bergelar Perdana Menteri.

Saya amat sedih mengenangkan nasib mereka. Walaupun kemiskinan bandar agak terbela namun nasib kemiskinan luar bandar agak dilupakan. Saya harap Tun bolehlah menyuarakan sedikit idea untuk orang kampung.

Sekian.
Wasalam.

Hello Tun,

I dont agree that we should not float the Ringgit. If the Ringgit strengthens against foreign currencies, our imports should be cheaper and our purchasing power improves. Ofcourse the strengthening of the ringgit should be accompanied by increase produtivity and efficiency. Economies which are well managed have strong currencies and with it a higher standard of living. If we are afraid to float the ringgit it only means one thing. We know we have skeletons in our cupboard.

I know you hate comparing us with our neighbour, Singapore. But the truth is they have a higher standard of living inspite of the fact that their currency has appreciated more than twice our ringgit. For Singaporeans, they dont feel the pinch when they travel overseas or send their children for overseas education. For the average Malaysian the moment you step out of the country, you realise how much more painful and poorer you are.

Bottom line is we mis-manage our economy and our rich resources. Had it been otherwise, 1 Ringgit would have been equivalent to S$2 by now. And Johoreans would be driving down in droves to Singapore each week-end and spending our mighty Ringgit, not the other way round. I am sure this is in your dreams. But how did you let this dream get away? Why Tun?

Assalamualaikum Tun & everybody,
This is the 3rd time I've posted a comment here. Rasanya geramm sangat dan perlu luahkan. Its all about PetroDollar. Yes, eventually the world will run out of oil, but the increase in oil price should not be this drastic and sudden. President Ahmedinijad at the recent UN meeting on food crisis at Switzerland says there's plenty of oil around. Again I said its all about Petrodollar. Unfortunately Badawi, either due to his incompetence, ignorant, arrogance egoistic attitude towards Tun or blatantly stupid failed to curb this problem by addresing the issue of PetroDollar. His solution is very simple..lets suck the money from the Rakyat. What next.. in few months time lets do it even more right? If this carries on, standard of living will go down, the poor will get poorer, and we all know who are the poor ones in the country, the very people that UMNO claim to be champion of. With proverty social problem will follow, it is inevitable. So Badawi has dragged all of us in this potential vicious cycle. He also failed to address RND on alternatives to fuel, oil will dry up my friends, but there is still time to look and research for alternatives and the time starts now.
Tun, we have got to do something about this man..Badawi. His destroying the country. Hancur masa depan..As much as I love you, you did path the way for him to become PM, so now lead us to bring him down and elect new brave, honest & smart leader. We don't need politicians.. we need leaders.

Salam Tun,

Dear Tun,

i don't want to be offensive or anything, but if the price of the fuel went up recently, shouldn't the burden of living especially in the city like KL be reduced? say for example, remove car taxes and sorts.

i mean its good to bring the price of the fuel to the current market price so that the people do not become too pampered and such. but the problem with that is once the fuel price goes up, merchants of other trades as well food hawkers take the damn opportunity to raise prices as well. this darn well do not make any sort of sense.

then again, when we compare fuel prices of countries like S'pore or whatsoever, i'm quite sure that their cost of living will not increase an additional strain.

anyways, it is said that the price of petrol will increase from rm2.70 to at least RM4 come august. is that true?

Assalamualaikum wbh Tun,
This is not funny anymore. People are suffering. Our own people! I don't think the current PM lives in Malaysia. He seems oblivious to the fact that the normal people, real people out there can't even afford to feed their children dan give them good education anymore. Where is his head? And what will become of Malaysia in twenty years time? I'm worried.

mungkin mak aku cakap dalam hati
"melampau budak ni.." masa tu

apa apa sajalah.

macam sesetengah dari pembaca2 sekalian,
aku dilahirkan dan di besarkan dalam arus..
arus pemikiran Tun.

nak wasiatkan jantung, buah pingang, urat saraf..
tepuk jantung, tanyalah mulut.. adatak isap rokok.

Soal minyak meeemang besar.

senario 'mampu tapi jangan' mengingatkan saya
kepada kisah negara jiran yang pemimpinnya
tergila kuasa, rasa seumpama layak untuk segala.
Singapura, Singapura sebenarnya memeram kisah

Pak Lah..

AH?

lebih kurang begitulah..

bukan aku tak suka, bukan aku benci, bukan aku tak kasih.. tapi sebab aku kisah, aku benar benar ambil kisah.

Harga tak mungkin turun rasanya, jangan percaya cakap Lah Man.

Kini tiba masa kita mencari alternatif lain bagi menampung keperluan bahan bakar untuk kereta kita. Minyak dah mahal harganya, NGV nak kena ada modal besar sikit.. takkan nak guna gas masak? nanti bini kita muka senget pulak.

jangan tangkap aku jpj. aku nak bejimat ni.

Harga Minyak naik, ok.... ok ok.

The recent increase in oil price is just too drastic and that shows the lack of vision that our current leaders have. They can give all sort of reason why they did what they did.I can only predict and tell the current goverment that will be their downfall because they lack the 1 st and fore most reason that they are elected into office that is serve the people well! and not cause suffering and discomfort.
Our current PM is indeed a person lack of higher intellectual, lack of far vision and easy to manipulate by people around him.I once had high regards towards him due to his sincerity attitude, clean looks and humble.I think all that is just a distance memories. Now his mind is just corrupted by the people around him or is he just playing dumb about the suffering his going to bring.I"m relly dissapointed at him.
Maybe now is the most suitable time to find a new capable ,dynamic and yet wise PM.He must have the "vision" and the right attitude to serve the "people" first. He must be the one who can find the best solution for our economy, our ultimate goal vision 2020 w/c i think now is beyond us and out of reach at the moment if not improve now and the prosperity of our people no matter his an indian, chinese, malay or etc.All i hope is the best for our people.MALAYSIA FOR MALAYSIAN not MALAYSIA FOR ME ONLY attitude.

Dear Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as an outsider of the government and industry I have a view about an issue related to this your posting - Oil Price. After reading your post here at your blog, I spend long moments thinking about what you wrote. This:
"I feel sure that maintaining the subsidy and gradually decreasing it would not hurt the Government finances". Then, I surf around the Internet, and obtain information, and interestingly from individuals who are inside, whose hearts attachment and connection is outside. Then I visit your blog again to read, and then I found the clue that you provided here, a one line paragraph so meaningful, this: "By all accounts the Government is flushed with money". I now understand leaders within the government, are in power, having at their disposal a sum of money that is a lot. Then, I sense your feeling about the maintaining of subsidy. So far so clear. Now let us check on the leaders in the government in terms of intention, sincerity, and why a majority if not a unanimous agreement, a decision, to implement this raise in the price of petrol and diesel. To the thinking, a leader in a government, when they make a decision, they can choose to consider about the rakyat first. Yet, I have learned, on this point of increasing oil price, the intention is them first. That is why some are having a mix feeling when one of them appear on Television, and announced this is a decision by the cabinet minister within the government that is goodness for the people. Next, the subsidy equation. To the general public, he equation is an option to prefer what amount of a burden wisely be shared by each citizen. No wonder they took longer at this session meeting, because the concern is, what amount shall be nice to score, for their own benefits, in an equation each citizen be burden to the maximum. I am learning, and I shall express what more information can be shared here with you and other friends here too.

Assalamualaikum Tun,

What do you think about T.S. Hassan Marican Statement on the following link:-
http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/8487/84/
Malaysia a net importer of oil by 2014.

Below is the claim by Petronas in 2003 during Tun's era.

Tan Sri Hassan Marican, pls have a look at the following statement quoted by Petronas on Edge Daily in 2003. How can Malaysia's reseves become drastically deplete since we dig out more OIC countries' oil and keep our reserves to be produce at a minimum level?

"Malaysia raises crude oil reserves
30-06-03 Malaysia's crude oil reserves including condensates rose 7.0 % to 4.54 bn barrels, from 4.24 bn barrels in 2002, according to Petroliam Nasional. In a statement on June 30, it said natural gas reserves grew to 89.0 tcf from 87.5 tcf and was about three times the size of the crude oil and condensates reserves.
"The increase in both crude oil and natural gas reserves was the result of new discoveries following continued investments in the nation's upstream sector," it said.

The national oil corporation said at the current rate of production, the average life of Malaysia's oil reserves was 18 years while that of gas reserves was 35 years, compared to 2002 estimates of 17 years and 34 years respectively. It also said investments in Malaysia's exploration and production activities grew significantly in FY03, indicating the high potential of the country's acreages and attractiveness of the production sharing contracts (PSC).
"During the year under review, the PSC contractors increased their investments substantially by 23.0 % to a record RM 10.41 bn compared to RM 8.46 bn in 2002," it said.

About half of the total investments in the exploration and production (E&P) sector was made by foreign PSC contractors, with Petronas Carigali accounting for the remainder.
"The level of foreign investments in the country's E&P sector is expected to continue to increase in line with larger scale exploration production activities planned in the forthcoming year," it said.

Salam Tun,

I am really dissapointed to the leadership style of Pak Lah.

Instead of increase the petrol price, Malaysia should implement a good transportation systems. This should lighten the burden of people. Our salary is not matching against inflation. Therefore, sooner or later, talented professionals in Malaysia will sure looking forward to settle down in overseas. And this directly affect the developement of country.

So this is not much worth it. We may not feel this now, but when we realise about this. Then will be too late. As a citizen, I am really worried.

We foreseen this last 2 years, and we decided to moved to overseas. But what about those family with low income and with a lot of children to support? This will also affect population of Malaysia. As they are just unable to support their children. Parents are really facing difficuties.

The government should look into this issue.

My mother used to tell me a bowl of noodles costs 15 cents, 25 years later, i am buying the noodles for 3 ringgit. With the increase of petrol, i m sure the price of noodles will increase to 7 ringgit. From this example, we can see the significance of the inflation.

We really hope the government will look into this issue.

Thanks and Appreciated!

Personally, I feel that the subsidy removal is inevitable. It doesn't matter when, it will happen anyway. I also feel that the removal of the subsidy is an important milestone as we Malaysians have all along living in this "imaginary" environment where our fuel is so cheap. However, having said that, I also hope that the government would remove the excise duty and the "inefficient" support provided to Proton. That's truly a WASTE of taxpayer money and it's time that Malaysia build the economy e.g. in automotive as we have already lose out the golden opportunity to be the SEA hub couple of years ago. It's better to have a group of foreign automotive companies that operate successfully in Malaysia and provide us generous tax as opposed to trying to make a local manufacturer stay afloat for umpteen years!.

Jurutera tempatan dah lah gaji rendah, kena bayar tax pulak. Itu sebab ramai yg lari ke Saudi Aramco, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Australia. Dengar cerita Malaysian engineers is highly respected in the middle east because of honesty, low profile, hard work, excellent accomplishment and excellent team work. That's why they are paid more than the Indian/Pakistani/Indonesian in Saudi Aramco.Tapi kenapa di PETRONAS, mereka di diskriminasi. Orang Melayu mendiskriminasi orang Melayu sendiri. Kenapa????? Jawab HASSAN MERICAN!!!!!

Our Govt likes to lie. Lie on the date of election. The sudden increase in the price of petrol in the month of June instead of August. Next it seems the PM respect the rights and interests of tourists than the locals. I wonder when he died what will historian think of him and what legacy will he leave behind.

Saya amat setuju dgn pendapat & luahan perasaan rakan bloggers yg menyebut tentang kemampuan Malaysia mengeluarkan minyak sendiri. Salam Yg Bhg Tun,

Me and the rest of YOUR rakyat here are hoping that you do spend your time reading our comments although it might be draggy sometimes.

We hope our grouses are being heard and with that something can be initiated from your end, whether thru your public statements or answers to journalists when you're being asked on this issue.

We cannot declare our frustrations thru our MPs because we know they can't and won't do much.

We cannot declare our frustrations via gathering because we need permit to do so, and of course it will not be granted.

It is very disheartening to read some of the comments here especially from the middle and below income earner.

If i really want to express my resentment towards this guy Abdullah Badawi, i would have use the most vulgar words i know and wish his aids would read it and know that, this idiot is breaking the morale and hopes of the ordinary Malaysian at large.

Tun,

Honestly, despite the economic situations and inflation; which there's nothing much we the rakyat can do besides taking precautions and hoping that the government can help to cushion it a bit, there's nothing much left in us.

There's no more hope for better Malaysia with it's political turmoil and a FLIP-FLOP as the premier.

There's no hope to live life with a little bit of comfort like bringing own parents for vacation, like one of the comment i read here.

It is so very awful and disturbing to know such little things would be a luxury now.

I read somewhere; that sort of sickness is a symptom of some kind of brain disorder.

Can we have someone like that to lead the country?

Does that mean that the rest of the cabinet members are also having similiar disorder because they don't have any qualms about it at all?

But one person that i know of who really knows how to take advantage of his father-in-law situation is who else; if not Mr KJ.

The fuel can be RM10 per litre; he won't have problems in paying it, ain't it KJ?

I fully agree with you that the only way out seems to be:- Remove this deadly cancer with the surgical knife, throw out that rotten tyranny!!!

It is the right time that this grossly rotten, corrupt and incompetent flip flop tyranny that remove the fuel subsidies & increase the electricity tariffs should also be removed by whatever means necessary & to accomplish this, all & whoever, MPs from both BN or Pakatan Rakyat, it is your call now and as all the people of Malaysia are firmly behind you to remove this rot. Cannot imagine that a nett producer & nett exporter of Crude Oil has to do this, look at Brunei, Saudi Arabia and many other crude oil nett exporters, there are no increases of prices of Petrol & Diesel at their pumps as both & all are nett producers and nett exporters of Crude Oil and they are now enjoying a boost to their state coffers & economies with a whopping windfall in oil prices of the current US$137/- per barrel that earned them huge foreign exchange reserves from their Crude Oil exports. But in Malaysia the reverse is true as there is no boost to the economy, but only sadness prevailed because the foreign exchange reserves from Crude Oil nett exports earned are poorly managed or badly mis-managed and no one knows where all the profits over the years had gone and we are saying all the 700 or more Billions earned had disappeared and there is no accountability by the tyranny power that be. None of the beneficial projects initiated by you are ever completed but still the same those monies that were allocated are also depleted sadly without any notable achievements.

Look at how BN leaderships' spending lifestyle ...

1. RM 100 million on renovation of Parliament building and leaked thereafter;

2. National Astronaut Programme - RM 40 million;

3. National Service Training Programme - yearly an estimate of RM 500 million;

4. Eye on Malaysia -RM 30 million and another RM5.7 million of free tickets;

5. RM 4.6 billion, ’soft-loan’ to PKFZ and became almost a white elephant thereafter;

6. RM 2.4 million of indelible ink for 2008 March 8 general election but cancelled prior to voting day.

Now BN leadership is asking the depressed rakyat to spend wisely but majority of us are already over spending due to no further increase of their miserable salaries.

I wonder why the BN leaderships are not ordering the employers to increase the salaries of their employees so as to fight the inflation as a result of the hike in fuel prices???

What an eye opening article. Looking at the daily production and local consumption, Petronas is making billions from 'anugerah alam' which is supposed to be enjoyed by Malaysian citizen. We do not need to incresae the price at all because the 'free oil' belonging to Malaysia is alrady making billions for the country from international sales. That's my personal opinion.

Btw, Pak Lah should read your blog and learn something. Or is he? I wonder...

Salam buat Tun,

Biar rakyat fikirkan tentang diri sendiri.

Sekitar 1986,terdapat satu Tabung dipanggil Tabung Warisan Petronas.

0. 35 riyal satu liter.

Kalau kita tengok Qatar,Qatar harga minyaknya RM0. 87 seliter @ 80 dirham. Qatar macam kita, pengeksport minyak.

Kita?LPG belambak kat Sarawak nun.

Penipuan yang kerajaan buat tentang hal kenaikan amat jelas. Kerajaan kata subsidi kena hapus perlahan-lahan sebab nanti tak lama lagi rizab minyak akan habis. Jadi rakyat kena berlatih hidup tanpa subsidi.

Kini harganya kira-kira USD96 setong. Bermakna penambahan keuntungan buat kerajaan Malaysia sebanyak USD 1. 612 bilion.

walaupun kos membina stesen janakuasa adalah mahal tapi bg jangka masa yg panjang rakyat dpt menikmati harga yg rendah bg pengunaan tenaga elektrik.

Dear respected Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad,

The missing ingredient or what current government lacks is sensibility - a common sense that is shared by majority of Malaysian.

They (the strong voices among them and their advisors) miscalculated or purposefully gave the PM wrong advise as to precipitate the down fall thus the power transition can be achieved earlier.

I'd say it is a miscalculation on their part if they think that by rising the oil price so suddenly and so drastically as a way to cut the subsidy being enjoyed by the non-citizen, the Singaporean and Thais at the border. They should be required to pay at market price and the citizen still get to enjoy lower price.

Ultimately, it is Malaysians that suffers the most.

By the way, my favourite walnut muffin cost me RM2.00 at the bakery tonight. The old price of RM1.80 is crossed over by a pen and a new price is written over it.

That's only for starters!

Thank you for this blog as it is a positive avenue that can bring Malaysians to pour out all that bottled up inside :)

wassalam.

Stupid Gov. Dia tipu rakyat lagi!!!. Kata banding dengan Thailand, Singapore, indonesia. kita masih murah. kenapa tak banding dengan Brunei? Arab? negar pengeluar minyak macam Malaysia.

Kerajaan tak mampu? Sekarang ni harga pasaran dunia perol ialah USD 100/b, jangan lupa sebanarnya USD dah susut 20% (Dulu 1 USD = 3.8 RM, sekarang ni 1 USD = 3.2 RM).

Ok, kalau saya guna USD untuk kira-kira, harga pasaran memang meningkat, ini bermakna Malaysia untung lagi banyak kerana kita pure Petrol exporter, tak import langsung. Negara seperti brunei arab, dan negara pengeluar minyak lain dah menurunkan harga minyak tempatan mereka kerana keuntungan export petrol mereka maningkat. Hanya Malaysia saja naik, adakah Pklah tak tahu kiri-kiri? atau dia memang nak buat macam tu supayah Ahli keluarganya untung lagi banyak!!!

First year dia rugi, tetap second year and onward dia akan RM60000 setahun. Adakan ini dibenarkan oleh kerajaan? Adakah ini dah diteliti oleh kerajaan? Kalau dibenarkan, jom kita beli 1000 buah kerata buruk dan mendapat keuntungan RM600,000 setahun. tak ya kerja. The most stupid Gov in the world!!!!

Dear Tun,

The Government need to cut down the fuel subsidy and increase the price as they may need more money to subsidize the bunch of ministers in the Cabinet to buy calculators and Economics books to study on how to manage the country's economy in a proper way. As said by the Prime Minister, our fuel prices are the cheapest in Asia (after Brunei.) However, he never thought that our salary and wages are also one of the cheapest in Asia. There are many things that we can compare if the Government wants to; firstly, the car prices (Malaysia vs other countries), the effectiveness of public transportation and etc....
Why can't they think on the aspect of purchasing power, inflation and the burden to be borne by the rakyats due to the chain effects to the increase price of food, transport services and consumer goods due to the increase price of fuel? How about cost vs quality of living, ability of companies to survive in this country due to increasing operational costs whereby failure which may cause closure of companies, lose of jobs, lesser career opportunities, brain drain to other countries, increasing of crime rate resulting from trimming of jobs opportunities.

Pak Lah should be sitting in his office and counting his days. He has definitely make Barisan Nasional irrelevant to this country. An extremely bad decision made (for the 40% fuel hike) assessing from the political, economic and social perspective.

We need to thank you Tun for your wise decision in carrying out the LRT system project or else we will be dropped dead with the current public trasportation system, TOLL PRICES and the FUEL PRICES! We anticipated the LRT system to be expanded to ease the congestion in the city however, instead of carrying out the expansion, our "beloved" Prime Minister spent millions of ringgits to create a single angkasawan and pretending making the country proud of such gimmick-ed achievement. The millions of ringgits could have benefited millions of Malaysians but ended up benefiting only a single man called the Angkasawan. The Government thinks that the rakyats are infants in politics and economy thus easy to be cheated, but the March 8 general election results has clearly shown that the rakyats are not stupid.

As mentioned in my posting to your earlier article, we need you to comeback to the politics. You need not your son to vacate his seat for you as there are many others would vountarily vacate their seats for you. We need excellent economic-thinkers like you to save our rice bowls and wallets. You could have read some of the postings from fellow bloggers on how hard their lives were hit by bad decision making by the Government thus you have to seriously consider to comeback to help out of charity and sympathy towards all Malaysians.

Currently, the rebate propose by the government may not seemed to be adequate to cover the losses from buying expensive fuel. Also, the length of time taken to send these rebate back to the rakyat may not in time to help the needy ones

Salam Tun,

Pak HASSAN MERICAN DAH PENDEK AKAL KE!!!!!!!

Survival of the richest
by Rober Kiyosaki

Most of us are aware of the sacrificial slaughter of Bear Sterns. Some people call it a bailout, but I call it a handout -- a government handout to some of the richest people on Earth, paid for by American taxpayers.

It's the survival of the richest, and the poorest be damned. There's something dismal about a society that operates by those values.

The Economy on Life Support

I understand why the Federal Reserve did what it did with Bear Stearns. The Fed was doing its job -- acting as the lender of last resort, pumping money into a dying system. It wanted to prevent a run on the bank and economic chaos. It was a very creative financing move, using the Fed's magic checkbook to pump more liquidity into a thirsty market -- sort of like a physician administering life-saving measures to a critically wounded patient.

My problem with the move is that the Fed saved this patient because it's a wealthy one. Saving the biggest investment banks in America is welfare for the rich. Would the Fed do that for you or me if we screwed up our investment portfolio? Is the Fed going to bail out the millions of people facing foreclosure because the value of their homes is less than their mortgages? If I'm a small-business owner and fall behind on my taxes, is the Fed going to pay my taxes for me? If I can't pay off my college loan, will the fed pay it for me?

Aren't these investment bankers supposed to be the smartest guys in the world? Aren't they the people we entrust with our investment and retirement money? Aren't they supposed to be financially fit? Some blame subprime borrowers as the culprits in this mess, but the supposedly brilliant investment bankers bought their mortgages. Was that smart?

A Handout for the Rich

This bailout was a signal to Wall Street that the Fed stands behind them -- that they're on the same team. It was a thumbs-up to the super-rich: "Do what you want. If you screw up, we'll cover your blunders."

Ralph Nader's father purportedly once said that "Capitalism will never fail because Socialism will always bail it out." My concern, especially in this election year, is that socialists will seek revenge. Already I can hear the war cry "tax the rich!" The problem with taxing the truly rich is that the rich simply move their money to countries that treat them and their money with undue respect. And when the rich move their money, the poor and middle class end up paying more taxes.

Not only will taxes go up, but the prices of food and fuel will increase, because the purchasing power of the dollar will continue to decline. This rise in cost of living, plus higher taxes and stagnant wages, could lead to unrest -- protests, riots, and possibly chaos. In other words, what the Federal Reserve was attempting to prevent may happen anyway.

When Capitalism Stumbles

Bailing out the rich means over $800 billion from the Fed's magic checkbook entered the market. Immediately, the stock market rebounded and the price of gold and silver declined. The U.S. dollar strengthened against the euro. While this looks like a good sign, I'm afraid the problem isn't solved. The inevitable may only have been delayed.

Our problem is a toxic U.S. dollar. Printing funny money steals from the poor and middle class, savers, and the elderly. It may be legal, but it isn't moral or ethical. As long as the Fed is allowed to wield its power at will, the prices for food and fuel will only go up.

So will the price of gold and silver. Some are calling for gold and silver to go over $2,500 and $200 an ounce, respectively. Some even believe gold will go as high as $5,000 an ounce. I hope not. While I get excited about seeing the gold I purchased for less than $300 an ounce flirt with $1,000 an ounce, I also begin to worry.

The rise in the price of gold is a sign that capitalism has stumbled. And when capitalism stumbles, workers' wages buy less and savings are wiped out. Even gains from the stock market are diminished because our dollar gains are worth less.

Troubles Past and Present

Throughout history, when capitalism stumbles chaos erupts and sometimes despots take over. For example:

• In 1897, the Russian ruble was pegged to gold and a period of relative economic growth followed. Russia went off the gold standard to finance World War I. The government fell to the Bolsheviks in 1917, and the Russian mafia took control of the economy.

• After World War I, the German middle class was wiped out and Adolf Hitler was voted into power in 1933.

• In the 1930s, China was the only country on the silver standard. In 1935, the nationalist Chinese government started issuing paper money. In 1937, in order to fight the Japanese, the government began printing funny money. The value of their currency went from four yuan per dollar in 1936 to a trillion yuan per dollar in 1949. In May of 1949, the Chinese government fell to Mao Tse-Tung and the Communists.

• In 1984, Yugoslavia hosted the Winter Olympics just as their currency, the dinar, began to devalue. In 1989, the IMF recommended more devaluation and the freezing of workers' wages. Rioting broke out, and in 1989 Communist party leader Slobodan Milsoevic was elected into power. Yugoslavia broke apart as war and ethnic cleansing began.

As capitalism falters, the rich move their money out of the country, violence increases, and politicians promising prosperity are elected. It's happened before, and I fear it's happening again. Trouble brews when we steal from the poor and give to the rich

Salam Tun,

Saya sokong tulisan 'sokong kerajaan'.

Tun,
You are not God nor the angel nor the devil. You re just a human being that got to become Malaysia's 4th PM.

We do not expect you to lead us to win the fight against world hegemony or neo-colonialism. It is a collective effort, which now we manage whatever we can through such blogs here.

Meanwhile looking at what else you can do, many here believe that there is one. You are the Advisor to Petronas. You would have the respect up there. You will have to do something better than just give us the raw data and your still able astute analysis. Perhaps there is some suggestion or brilliant plan you can brainstorm with Petronas. Umno just had theirs. Of course their agenda is broad and they won't tell us what is it they figured out for the rakyat.

But now you have less positions and an important one in Petronas. It is the most crucial for the rakyat here. Perhaps there is something you can figure out up there. Perhaps you can organise an open tour of Petronas and we youtube it to let people appreaciate what powers determine the pricings. We won't know what. We aren't up there.

Nevertheless, we thank you for putting out important basic analysis from Petronas here.

Assalamualaikum Tun,

Sepanjang pemerintahan Tun selama 22 tahun tak pernah pun minyak naik sebegini tinggi.

Setelah hilang 5 negeri campur 1 barulah terjaga tetapi masih tak mahu sedar.

Bila agaknya PakLah hendak insaf?
Adakah setelah semuanya telah hilang?

Cikgu Rahman said...

Anggaran ..

Fakta :

1. Untung PETRONAS tahun 2008 =RM 130 Billion

2. Jumlah Subsidi Petronas (sebelum minyak dinaikkan)=RM 20 billion (RM 65 billion satu putar belit shj..menteri kewangan ke-2 telah menidakkannya !!)

Total jumlah wang negara (Petronas, sawit dll)=X

Total jumlah projek besar (yg menteri ada kaitan) yg mesti dilaksanakan=Y

Baki subsidi minyak dan bahan2 keperluan utama =Z

Formula ekonomi BN:

Z = X - Y

This is a repeat posting. What was submitted on 6/6/08 has 'disappeared'

///Obviously our increase in petrol price is far less than in the United Kingdom or the United States. But our per capita income is about one-third of theirs. In purchasing power terms our increase is more than in the UK or the US.///--- TDM

The price of petrol in UK is around RM 7, US, RM 5, and Malaysia now RM 2.70. Since their per capital is 3 times ours, to the average person there, the price works out to be worth RM 2.33 in UK, 1.66 in US and RM 2.70 here. Transport services are expensive in Malaysia all the time. But when we consider the cost of private transport services, we should count not only the price of oil but the price of the vehicle itself.

Cars imported into UK or US do not attract import duties, or payment to overcome non-tariff barrier such as the APs in Malaysia. The APs were said to be worth 20,000 ringgit a piece, and cars running in the country are over-priced at least by that amount. Running at 1,000 km a month, and if the life span of cars average 200,000 kms, consuming petrol at 15 km per litre, a car should burn 13,333 litres during its lifetime. The 20,000 ringgit paid for the overpriced car is equivalent to making advance over-payment of 1.5 ringgit per litre of petrol since the APs scheme started in the country in the 1970s right through 2003 when the market price of petrol were less than 30 Dollar per barrel, or around 1.00 ringgit a litre.

Malaysians do not need subsidies of petrol, if they do not have to pay for their over-priced cars. Remove AP and allow the people to freely import cars, including used cars which Japanese dispose off after three years at 20% of its original value.

The APs system was said to be in place for the implementation of NEP. AP scheme was later used to support Proton. Proton as a national car maker created a class of car part manufacturers with captured purchaser at inflated prices without a need to compete on the quality of its product, or efficiency of production. Twenty years into producing the national car, Proton has earned a place as idol to be kept for worship, at the expense of the citizens slaving to pay more for their transport vehicles.

It is because of the desire to enable Proton to sell more cars that public transportation was neglected. Citizens were trapped into owning cheap quality local made cars and made to rely on it for work or play. The vicious circle resulted in the public transportations becoming even more unreliable, and petrol fuel cost becomes a significant part of family budget.

The over-reliance of private vehicles for living is the end result of the policy direction of TDM to satisfy his ego as the founder of the national car industry. Economists warned in 1980s about the potential fiasco of national car, and the prescience is now confirmed.

Our per capita income is about one third of UK and USA, and it is also about one-third of Singapore. Singapore is able to achieve three times our per capita income when she has no natural resources at all. They did it because they have non-corrupt government. If Malaysia had been able to attain that income level, oil subsidy is non-issue.

Malaysia could have achieved the same level of economic development if Tunku was allowed to continue as PM, without Harun Idris and his ilk making demand like TDM is doing it to PM AAB today, and if Jafar Albar, had not been encouraged to organize procession on the streets of Singapore in 1964, and later caused the split of Singapore from Malaysia.

Had Tunku been allowed to continue, and Singapore willing to rejoin us, and the country administered based on meritocracy, rule of law, and zero tolerance to corruption and hence non-existence of cronyism and nepotism, Malaysians would have been able to triple its per capital income, and be more than capable of paying market price for oil. Of course the history of Malaysia will have no place for TDM.

///In the first place the Government should not have floated the Ringgit. A floating rate creates uncertainties and we cannot gain anything from the strengthened Ringgit. Certainly the people have not experienced any increase in their purchasing power because of the appreciation in the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Ringgit.///--TDM

That is a matter of perception whether the people have experienced any increase in their purchasing power with the Ringgit moving upwards against US Dollar. In Malaysia imported goods should cost the dealers less, but whether the dealers decide to mark up the profit margin is not a decision for the consumers. But going overseas, when the exchange rates for Ringgit goes up, Malaysians have more foreign currencies in their pockets, which should be thought that the same quantum of Ringgit has in fact an increase in the purchasing power.

///Actually the Ringgit has increased by about 80 sen (from RM3.80 to RM3.08 to 1 US Dollar) per US Dollar, i.e. by more than 20 per cent. This means we are paying 20 per cent higher for our imports including the raw material and components for our industries.///--TDM

The observation is not valid for persons who made purchase directly overseas. The payments have to be based on currency exchange rates, whether or not Ringgit has a fixed exchange rate with US.

///Since oil prices are fixed in US Dollar, the increase in US Dollar prices of oil should also be mitigated by 20 per cent in Malaysian Ringgit./// --TDM

We have an excess of production over export, as net exporter of oil. The oil price in the country should not be affected by world market price at all.

It has been said that we have a higher qualify oil for export than for import, and so we should have extra earnings even if imports equal exports. We could even export only those excess, and consume our one crude oil. The world market price of oil is only for the sake of argument. Thus, whether Ringgit is has a fixed rate with Dollar is not relevant.

///But the Government wants to please the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and decided to float the Ringgit. As a result the strengthening of the Ringgit merely increased our cost of exports without giving our people the benefit of lower cost of imports.///---TDM

Economists talk about fiscal and monetary policy in the management of one’s economy. When the Ringgit has a fixed rate with US Dollar, we reap the consequence of monetary policies decided by the United States. So we are not independent in monetary policies. US Dollars float with other currencies in the world. When Ringgit has a fixed exchange rate with US Dollar rate, it floats with Dollar against other currencies. So Ringgit cannot have a fixed value, even if it is linked to gold whose price changes on the minutes.

This is not wisdom after the event. I had actually told a Government Minister not to float the Ringgit three years ago. But of course I am not an expert, certainly I know little about the international financial regimes.///--TDM

The monetary policies are determined technically by the Central bank, and Bank Negara has competent professionals who make informed decision. The suggestion by TDM was not wisdom, even after the event.

Loh said...

///Actually our wages are high compared to some of our neighbours. The investors who come here are attracted not by cheap labour but by other factors, among which is the attitude of the Government towards the business community and the investors in particular.///--- TDM

Foreign investors were interested in Malaysia when they could make a fast buck, and those who were willing to take a chance with the judiciary system in the country were foot loose. The many restrictions imposed on investors including employment and equity issues prevented many who could have come in here to promote knowledge based economy. The poor quality of local graduates and the departure of our trained manpower to higher paying countries, caused partly by the university admission system, have been another factor which prevented the development of knowledge-based industries from taking shape.

///From what I hear business friendliness is wanting in the present Government – so much so that even Malaysians are investing in other countries. There are rumblings about political affiliations influencing decisions. Generally Government politicians are said to be arrogant.///---TDM

NEP and the requirement of BUMI equity in companies was a push factors for local companies investing in other countries. Tun Daim is said to have invested billions of hard currencies overseas. His investment overseas and that of other wealthy Bumis makes the 30% NEP target forever unattainable. Yet the government is still insistent in fulfilling Tun Razak’s dead-bed wishes but at the same time working hard to ensure that official statistics fall short of the target! The government and UMNO leaders even got angry with ASLI for reporting that the 30% objective has long been surpassed; they should have been happy for finally achieving success. We know of course that the 30% was a moving target as an excuse for continuing with NEP which TDM admitted was discriminatory to non-Malays.

///Malaysia is short of manpower. The labour intensive industries are not benefiting Malaysians. Foreign workers are remitting huge sums of money home.///--- TDM

Foreign workers also contributed to social problems in the country. There are at least a million illegal workers. If they can go against the law to stay in, would they be afraid of breaking other laws to make their earning easier? Is our PDRM well manned to take care of the million illegal foreign workers if they choose to take the laws in their own hand, after having broken the immigration regulations in the first place?

News reports on snatch are not on the headlines but they are certainly happening on a daily basis. How much are attributable to the illegal workers, and foreigners masqueraded as students?

///The industrial policy must change so that high tech is promoted in order to give Malaysians higher wages to cope with rising costs of living.///---TDM

The regulations for admission to universities and the scholarship awards in the name of NEP have a direct impact on the lack of high tech companies in the country. Changing industrial policy to promote high tech industries may be necessary but for that to work, NEP programmes on education, employment, equities pertaining to racial qualification should all be removed.

///The world is facing economic turmoil due to the depreciation of the US Dollar, the sub-prime loan crisis, rising oil and raw material prices, food shortages and the continued activities of the greedy hedge funds. The possibility of a US recession is real. In a way the US is already in recession. The world economy will be dragged down by it.

Malaysia will be affected by all these problems. I wonder whether the Government is prepared for this./// ---TDM

The government leaders are able and ready to take up residency in foreign countries which are based only on the financial status. The people have been told by the PM and the DPM to change their lifestyle. When oil price is high, don’t drive. When there is no public transport to go to work, don’t go. When price of rice go up, eat less. Eating less in fact improves health condition. Rising food prices brings collateral benefits, and rising oil price and reducing disposable inform helps improve health. It is healthy to change lifestyle.

even harga naik.. kualiti bertambah.. rakyat tidak la rasa sangat.. sebab barangan kita kualitinya tinggi.. buruh kita kualitinya baik..

hm.. Melayu mudah lupa..bila dah senang habis yang dulu.. yang susah.. yang bawah.. dilupakan..

Tun,

Saya antara org yg less effected by fuel increased..

Subsidi.. persoalannya siapa yg majoritinya benefit dr subsidi yg melampau dr Kerajaan.
Biar saya kupas sikit.

80% drpd kendaraan di malaysia ni kbykannya digunakan oleh org bandaq2 besar.. mcm KL, penang, alor setar dll.
70% dr org bandaq adalah org yg berpendapatan tinggi & sederhana..
70% dr org yg berpendapatan tinggi & sederhana adalah rakyat malaysia yg kebanyakannya kaya raya & pendapatan tinggi compare dgn org kampung.
70% dr yg kaya raya & berpendapatan tinggi adalah yg memakai adalah kereta mewah yg fuel consumptionnya tinggi. jadi siapa yg isi paling byk?

Jadi persoalannya sekarang.. siapa yg paling byk makan subsidi kerajaan (duit rakyat) ? sampai bila nak bagi kat mereka? adakah org2 miskin layak atau org2 bandar yg kaya raya patut diberi subsidi..
jadi kalaula congak cara saya yg kurang cerdik.. kalau cthlah 56billion subsidi sebelum ni..

Dato' Hassan merican pun dah berbunyi dgn nada yg tak sedap sbb rakyat menghentam Petronas (mungkin kwn2 petronas bole bg komen lebih lanjut kot)..

Tetapi perlunya kerajaan sedar duit potongan itu "mesti" dichannelkan subsidi kepada rakyat miskin dr segi :-
1- subsidi makanan (semua rakyat dapat)
2- subsidi baja dll..(org miskin / petani dpt kbykan org melayu)
3- pembangunan luar bandar.. (tak payah utk pembangunan dlm bandar lagi)
4- concentrate kat sabah sarawak dr segi bantuan.. (kbykan org bumiputera miskin)

Kepada semua bloggers .. jgnla politikkan semua isu.. Kalau betul kerajaan PR prihatin kepada rakyat bglah rebat kepada rakyat negeri sendiri demi mengurangkan beban kenaikan harga minyak.. cth rebat mcm hapuskan cukai pintu ka bg free tambang feri, air free ka (selangor mcmana? dpt ke) dll yg bole kerajaan negeri tolong utk ringankan beban rakyat.. (kalau dah prihatin sgtla)..

Kata2 sinis sblm menutup isu:-
Org malaysia.. dah tau pendapatan tak seberapa beli kereta mewah (naikla moto ka, komuter ka)
Org malaysia.. dah tau duit tak seberapa tapi makan semua tempat hebat2 belaka. (belajaq2 la memasak, kurangkan makan luaq tak elok jugak utk kesihatan)
Org malaysia.. biaq papa asalkn bergaya.. (samalah dgn aku)
Org malaysia.. suka salahkan org lain tanpa menyalahkan diri sendiri (kena la belajaq cara menguruskan wang lepaih ni)
Org malaysia.. hutang keliling pinggang (credit card)
Org malaysia.. suka complain tapi takdak cadangan membina..

Wallaqwaqlam. .

p/s: cuba fikirkan.. masih teringat kata2 DSAI anwar nak tolong rakyat miskin.. saya fikir ini salah satu caranya.. DR Perspektif Lain..

Dearest TUN

Good day, I am very concerned with the current government. What are they thinking? What are their strategies? 1 day, they ban the sales of fuel to foreigners the next day, they lifted it!!! Is this their strategies or they just come out this measure from the sky!!!!!!!!! We really need someone that is far sighted enough to govern or manage the country. I strongly believe that knowledge will make a better person. I strongly hope that the government will only be managed by professional or someone who is far sighted enough. Why MNC or some companies need MBA or at least a degree holder to be their CEO or senior management, I humbly believe this is due to the reasoning that are given by them are much more rational and afterthought. Do you think that our current government really up to mark. I think most of us think otherwise. I am not anti government; I supported BN since I am able to vote. I love BN because they gave me education and also a peaceful life. However I am against those measures or strategies that are so short sighted. Assalamualaikum Yg. Mulia Tun Dr Mahathir

Sekian Terima Kasih.

Salam Tun,

This year marks broad inflation in almost all goods.

Reducing exchange rate from RM3.20/USD to RM 2.50/USD translate to saving of RM 0.70.

Taking from the base lower value of RM 2.50 ( The same as the base lower value of oil price), this saving is translated into a reduction of 28% of increase of petrol price. This result to a net increase of only 13% from RM 1.92/liter.

If I am Finance Minister 2, I think the petrol will increase at most to RM 2.17/liter

Before the government increase the petrol price, Finance Minister 2, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yackop has iterated in his televised interview in RTM1 that he does not want to use currence exchange rate mechanism .

So true as what Rasulullah s.a.w. has said in his hadith

Dimana kamu perolehinya maka raihkahlah ia."

The lost treasure of a muslim in Malaysia is the lost of pragmatism.
By being very "jumud" into own thinking without exercising flexibility will lead UMNO to lose it's original fight, that is the jihad for the well-being of the people.

In the past UMNO is strong ; not because the Ministers become the member of UMNO. UMNO is strong only because the people,- rakyat supported UMNO. This can only be continued only if it is seen that UMNO is fighting for the cause of the mass and not the well-being of certain people, especially those who are rich with high income and contracts.

In doing so, I do see that if the currency exchange rate mechanism still not enough to reduce the impact of inflation, the Ministers must first cut down their salary and "transportation allowances" before putting the burden on the shoulder of the rakyat.

In addition tax on high income group of people exceeding RM 20,000 should be increased. According to FM2, currently there are 38,000 citizen earning more than 20,000.
The richest should be the owner of Genting who . according to a magazine a few years ago earns RM 500,000 a month. I believe , if the tax is increase by 5% , this will lead to a saving of RM 1 billion per year. RM 1 billion is equavalent to about 20% of the saving (that is a from a total of 4 billion). If this is done, then the government is doing an economic justice that is ensuring equitable distribution of growth of economy to the rakyat.

Leading through example will not only projected good image to the people but also reaffirmed the perception of the rakyat - that the government (UMNO) is making the jihad for the well-being of the people. Unless this is done, then it is true as in hadith rasulullah , "Hikmah adalah pusaka yang hilang dari orang mukmin".

Salam Tun,

Sebelum saya ke Jepun(zaman pemerintahan Tun), saya sangat pro kerajaan, tetapi setelah pulang dr Jepun, 4 tahun kemudian (zaman pemerintahan Pak Lah), saya berasa sangat kecewa dgn keadaan Malaysia sekarang.
Kerajaan nak mengajar rakyat berjimat, tetapi layakkah? Duit dibazirkan berjuta-juta untuk menghasilkan seorang Doktor untuk menjadi angkasawan, tetapi ramai rakyat yg tertindas.Hasilnya, tak nampak apa pun...

Dear Tun Dr Mahathir,

First of all I'd like to say that 'Melayu cepat lupa'. Their attitudes towards you changed drastically the few moments you left office. For some of us, your farsightedness, your guts, courage and exceptional capability on the homefront and international levels will forever be casted in our hearts and minds, with much respect and gratitude. We are proud to have you served and steered us to the correct path with firmed resolves. You are up there in the league of the exceptional few the like of Lee KY, Mao TT & Thatcher.

Unfortunately the batton had to be passed on to the ordinaire or perhaps in retrospect, to the less than the ordinaire, which has resulted in our trangression into shaky grounds and trouble waters at the moment.

As the net exporter of oil, by not taking action on the domestic petrol and diesel prices would not result in the government losing money, as when dealing with the government, PETRONAS does not mark the domestic oil price to the world oil price (it is not that transparent, but I believe this is the case).

What happened was the Government would lose an opportunity to make a big chunk of additional money if the domestic oil price was not adjusted to the world oil price.

By increasing the domestic petrol and diesel prices to such a high level, the government cashed in on high world oil prices or to a certain extent took advantage of high world oil price environment to make additional income at the expense of the people. The final outcome is the government's account changes to big positive and the people's accounts change to big negative.

This decision to have additional income at the expense of the people should not have even crossed the government's mind considering that they "lost badly" in the recent general election. The people will not forget this in years to come, not even for the next 4 years when we'll have the next general election. How could they miss this perspective, so soon after their "defeat".

As the net exporter of oil, the only real factor which influences domestic oil prices is the PETRONAS exploration and production costs. Eventhough the exploration and production costs have doubled in the last 10 years, these costs do not translate into the same percentage increase for domestic retail prices of petrol and diesel, as there are other costs involved, and not all these costs should be passed on to consumers; some should be absorbed by oil companies which should result in reduced profits. But what we know PETRONAS profit has been breaking record after record for the past few years.

To sum it up, it was right to increase the petrol and diesel retail prices but to an extent to cover the increase in exploration and production costs but not to make extra money out of it; and not so when the people (who 50% of them voted against the government - popular vote) have to pay more for it.

But the pak lah's government increase the oil price until the rakyat suffer for daily living cost..Pak Lah and his ministers all get high salary...RM 20,000/- to RM 80,000/-.Their living standard like king..have bodyguards, maids and luxury houses and luxury cars with drivers..they live happily with lot of money..in their pockets...For them, don't know..rakyat biasa..how suffer..daily in Malaysia?

I get salary RM 1,000 per month in sales..End of the month, not enough money to fill petrol for my kancil car..But the government ministers all enjoying their allowances and bonus and extra...If this still going on like this,I believe, next election,Pak Lah government totally lose to opposition party and the opposition party will take over Malaysia and They control Malaysia. That time, current Pak Lah government don't angry with rakyats of Malaysia!!

Salam buat Tun.

Saya amat bersetuju dgn Tun bila kerajaan sekarang amat gemar bermentalitikan 'flip-flop' dalam kebanyakan keputusan yang mereka ambil. Contohnya, projek rel berkembar.

Dear Tun,

I am a financial analyst with a major investment house and substantially cover the oil and gas industry, locally as well as regionally for the benefit of our global investors.

Allow me to rectify some facts in your otherwise flawless analysis of the oil situation.

Malaysiakini, on Thursday, ran an excellent article on where the oil revenue went and what it takes to keep the nation's oil company afloat in midst of extreme competition globally and geopolitics instability.

I think many people are confused between PETRONAS, the government and the subsidy issue.

i. PETRONAS, like Shell,BP and Exxonmobile is a commercial entity. What revenue it makes, it pays a substantial amount of taxes, royalty, dividends to the government.

ii. Much of PETRONAS' revenue is generated through its investments abroad, not in Malaysia. Its reserves in Malaysia is very limited. That is why they have to always invest abroad, to compete with other oil companies for new sources of oil. Or else money for Malaysia will run dry when the oil in Malaysia runs dry. Investing abroad is very, very expensive.

iii. Malaysia's domestic oil production is very small. It cannot be compared with Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait, with largest production as well as reserves in the world.

iv. To say that cost of operations have not changed is grossly inaccurate. Cost of operations and logistics have increased tremendously - about 300 percent world wide - when oil is expensive, everybody wants to monetise, so it has to compete with other oil producers. Not to mention the staff being lured away by overseas companies offering much higher salaries.

THE CRUNCH - With the taxes paid by all companies in the country to the government,it then decides what to do with the money.

Subsidies are a GOVERNMENT decision, whether they want to subsidise rice, or fertiliser or petrol, or not subsidise anything at all and let everything be sold at market rate - its up to them.

Petroleum prices is at present a controlled item. Its price is set by the government. If they decide to continue to subsidise petroleum but not as much as before - and set the price at RM2.70, all companies i.e. Shell, PETRONAS, BHP, Esso have to sell at that price.

Given that the oil issue is a worldwide phenomenon and Malaysians are not the only ones feeling the pain, the question is what is the government doing to MAKE LIFE MORE BEARABLE for the common people?

The more accurate question would be given the amount of money that has been paid into the government coffers, WHAT has been done with it? WHERE has it gone to?

At the end of the day Malaysians must ask the right questions, make the right people accountable.Or else life is going to be worse for everybody and unscrupulous politicians on both sides of the fence will further their own causes and thrive on the people's ignorance.

Pray and pray and pray that this country does not go to the dogs. We love it too much.

from how i see it, most of petronas's profits are used to cater for some mega projects which will, in the end, become white elephants, proven with time.

i am very frustrated with the attitude of our current politicians who seem to be stuck in the political paradigm although its almost 3 months since the general election.

they should contribute to the people, cos that's how they rise to the top. not just be arrogant and ignore people's needs.

lets ask the ministers to change their lifestyles to counter the increase in petrol prices. why dont they change their official cars to Kancil. saving petrol and the rakyat's money.

why no such action?

Askm Tun Dr. Mahathir,

Cubalah.

3. Kerajaan kata masih ada subsidi RM 625. Tapi bila nak dapat? Setahun lagi? Sementara itu, ikat perut... Pandai2 lah kau rakyat... kata Pak Lah.

rusdham said...

Tun,
Saya tak nampak apa perancangan Pak Lah.Harga Minyak naik tanpa mengambil kira perasaan rakyat sedangkan kita masih untung dari segi kedapatan eksport minyak.

Tun, i agree with some bloggers said that we need an alternative power to spare the use of petroleum in our country.

Why don't we build a solar vehicle with a built in petrol system so that in the day, a car will use a solar power as it's primary power and a petrol as a backup if the weather condition are rainy or cloudy. By the night, the car will use a fully petrol as it's secondary power because the sun never rises at night.

And then, about the alternative way to generate electricity by petroleum gas. How about we use the biofuel energy sources or nuclear energy sources as an alternative way to spare the use of petroleum gas that will be finished day by day if it's keep digged in the future.

I know the nuclear energy sound ridiculous idea because of the high cost production and need a lot of intelligent to build it. Furthermore, the U.S goverment will interfere with our country if that happen. But to think about a long terms of the petroleum uses and the cost of it, why don't we just try to built one. This is for the good sake of our country in the future.

I think somehow and someday this petroleum as i called it as "BLACK GOLD" will be finished. Soon, we will be forced by the nature itself to make an alternative way to spare the use of this black gold after it were finished digging by us, human for the sake of humanity.

Sekian Tun, Wassalam...

Year 97/98,i was earning gross RM1.8K per month and my god i was suffering....use to have dinner consisting of Nasi Paprik, Sayur Campur & telur dadar and it costs RM10.00 only (Nearly EVERYDAY). Occasionally or once a week eat Pizza!! Now i dont think we can get that anymore. I even sold my beloved "letchumi", ie. proton wira at below market price, No handphone (blacklisted actually), no new clothes for so many years, Credit Card max-up, had to do cash advance to give monthly "allowance" to my parents..end up can't pay the min coz DSAI so SMART increased this & that, including the min repayment to 10 or 15%. Crazy old C**t that guy, increased interest, increased this & that. How can you expect ppl or he rakyat to alter their lifestyle immediately!!!! Ppl do have previous expenses right?? Well it took me until 2003 to really managed to stabilised my financial situation. Now Y2008 earning >RM10K p/ mth & i am NOW watching my belt again...do not want to face the same difficult situation anymore. My two cents "life" story. Assalamua'laikum YABhg Tun

Case in point being:

Kepada Pak Lah and the geng, jangan perbodohkan rakyat..rakyat dah banyak yang pandai kaji benda-benda camni...

Pak Lah diberi jolokan Bapa Kenaikan Harga...

itu cerita pasal kakitangan awam, cuba tgk pulak kalau orang keje sendiri, lagi masalah...diaorang takde pendapatan tetap ...mana nak cari duit tambahan

Tu la pangkah sangat PakLAh...nak salah sape...sendiri mau ingat la...

Assalamualaikum Tun,

Apa rasionalnya?

Tahniah. Malaysia Boleh!!!

i. The Fed's twin mandate puts Bernanke in a tough spot
By Michael Mackenzie in New York Fri Jun 6, 4:55 PM ET

When it comes to talking about the dollar, silence is usually golden at the Federal Reserve. But this week Ben Bernanke waded into waters usually charted by the US Treasury in order to bolster the Fed's inflation-fighting credentials.

The Fed has a twin mandate of keeping both unemployment and inflation low. By linking higher import prices and consumer price inflation with a weaker dollar, Mr Bernanke highlighted how the central bank is caught between the nasty forces of slow growth and rising consumer prices...

Elevated oil prices also hurt global growth. Stronger growth outside the US has boosted the appeal of buying dollar-denominated exports in recent months. While the weaker dollar has fanned higher import prices, the boost in exports has helped stem the US economy's descent into a full-blown recession for now.

So it seems reasonable on the part of the Fed to try to stem the dollar's slide and, in turn, place a cap on oil. This would halt some of the pain at the pump for consumers - but would probably not push the US currency so high that it would start to harm the humming export sector. Together with easy monetary policy, the dollar helps to cushion the blow from the credit squeeze and the still-unfolding pain in the consumer sector.

Complicating matters now is the stance of the ECB. A rate rise this summer will only weigh further on a dollar backed by a 2 per cent Fed funds rate versus the ECB's current overnight rate of 4 per cent. With growth slowing in the eurozone and motorists protesting against high petrol prices, a rate hike seems questionable.

But there is little doubt the ECB's tough inflation stance will pressure the dollar lower. And, in turn, that will boost oil and fan inflation worries, confirming the likelihood of rate rises in Europe, so setting in chain a vicious cycle of further weakness in the dollar.

This leaves the Fed in the difficult position of watching import prices rising further and intensifying pain for consumers. All of which fosters the debate about inflation and possible Fed rate increases this year...

ii. Credit crisis still not behind Wall Street
By JOE BEL BRUNO, AP Business Writer 1 hour, 43 minutes ago

NEW YORK - The chief executives at the world's biggest financial institutions might have been a bit too optimistic by declaring we may be nearing the end of the global credit crisis.

Morgan Stanley's John Mack said in April it had reached its eighth inning or "maybe top of the ninth" of a baseball game. Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein compared it to football's "third or fourth quarter." Richard Fuld at Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch's John Thain were also more upbeat about the future.

Just as Wall Street started to look safer for investors, another wave of anxiety about the financial industry, inflation and the economy dragged down stocks this past week.

Investors continue to worry that the pain might not be over for financial companies — and that the market as a whole will suffer until investment banks release quarterly results later this month...

iii. Asian powers, US warn oil shock to hit global economy
by Miwa Suzuki
1 hour, 56 minutes ago

AOMORI, Japan (AFP) - The United States and Asia's four largest powers voiced concern on Saturday after a record spike in oil price as worries grew that energy costs may derail the global economy.

Oil prices, which have soared five-fold since 2003, posted their highest ever one-day gain of 10.75 dollars to close at a new record of 138.54 dollars in New York after hawkish remarks by an Israeli official on oil producer Iran.

US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said that the record oil prices were "a shock" and warned oil producers that it would do them no good if the US economy took a hit....Soaring oil prices have been blamed on a variety of factors including turbulence in the Middle East and rising consumption by emerging economies such as China and India.

Analysts said the sharp spike overnight was a reaction to reported remarks by Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz on Iran, a major oil producer.
Mofaz, a former defence chief, warned that the Jewish state would attack Iran if it continued its alleged nuclear weapons drive, although he stressed such an operation could only be conducted with US support.

Despite the spike, Bodman said he did not see oil prices as a "crisis" and denied the need for tighter regulations of oil markets...

iv. Stagflation round the corner Dawn
By M. Ziauddin

The Bank of England in its Inflation Report last week warned that the British economy is heading towards a recession. However, other indepdenent economists see a serious bout of stagflation round the corner as production is slowing down visibly at a time when inflation rate is threatening to hit four per cent against the annual target of two per cent...

Nota:

Okay, that put the crude oil to a possible USD150@barrel this summer - just to test the market and it depends on the winter this year and the weather outlook: the major crops producing areas.

What do you think, Tun?

Abdullah says the ringgit is going to appreciate...do you remember the late 70s - the stagflation times? it was different for us then, wasn't it?

I would not want to ask Tan Sri Zeti - she is way, way smarter than me - she has two minds. I don't want to disturb MoF-II.

ok - one copy goes to that old gentleman scribe.

Talking about weird decisions by the Government, they just announced today that details of 4 "swift measures" to ease the burden of the increased petrol price will be made next week. The mind boggles:

1. If they already have the 4 measures in policy, why wait until next week to reveal all?

2. Why didn't they just announce these measures concurrently with the announcement about the oil price increase? They could have then put more emphasis on these easing measures to downplay the impact of the sudden, whopping price increase.

This Government needs a professional PR agency really badly, I must say. And a better understanding of the meaning of "swift" to go along with it.

atlaxSalam Tun,
Inilah dinamakan “Melayu Benak”. Maaafkan saya kalau kasar bunyinya. Untuk berjuang membela bangsa sesuatu harus dilakukan.
Banyak perkara perlu dinilai semula.

I don't usually surf and read blog but one thing for sure is that the majority Malaysians sharing the same view as you.

I have been to UK and Germany for business trip and what been noticing is that their public transportation is so well connected and they can survive without car.

As such, the fuel price issue is secondary even though it is much higher than Malaysia.

On the other hand, as a Malaysian, in the near future and times to come, we really do not know how are we going to cope up with the inflation rate and rising living expenses.

Perhaps, the government should consider or in fact MUST reduce the toll charges and better still remove the toll gates in Kuala Lumpur.

I personally think that, the current government is not taking enough drastic measures to counter the upcoming problems!!

Whether the opposition is going to form a next federal government or not isn't important. The important here is the economic stability of our beloved country.

Really, really hope that Malaysia will be what it is, just like Malaysia under Tun administration.

We are frustrated but can only keep to ourself.

It will ease the lower income grioup.

Terima kasih Tun kerana masih mempertahankan rakyat-rakyat malaysia.

Terima kasih Malaysia sekarang dibawah pimpinan Paklah kerana banyak bantu saya untuk lari dari bebanan. Terima Kasih banyak-banyak.

Askm Tun,
Apa ke logiknya diesel dinaikkan RM 1 iaitu 63%? Sedangkan cukai jalan jauh lagi mahal dari petrol? Memang Pak Lah tak pandai pikiaq!

Salam Tun,
Before U r living us,
Hopefully U produce to us books on
HOW TO BE A PM OF MALAYSIA.
So the future kids may refer them.

Our neighbor has already far ahead of us on this.

Tun Oh Tun...

Tun, pls show us your magic power again. The longer Pak Lah stays up there will make all of us suffer.

Tun, the BIGGEST MISTAKE you ever made was to appoint Pah Lah as PM.

Tun placed him there and now you should show your Magic Power to remove him as PM. You owe us that!!
